lorddulaarsenal the main thing I notice is he gradually became way less physically robust and willing to fight for loose balls. in those first 5 months it felt like he never lost a duel and his pressing was relentless. maybe the injuries put a mental handbrake on him, because he's been flopping about ineffectually for over 12 months

Meatwad His allround game was top class and everyone was fawning over how good he was and revelling in that we now finally had a proper no. 9. His goal scoring record was fine during his first time with us. Don't know why that clip has omitted those goals.

Segway he had a little purple patch of goals but went on a long goalless run despite playing well. I think this is just who he is as a player, he's always had hot streaks but he's just not a reliable goal scorer.

Qwiss he was always that way at city. Funnily enough at both City and Arsenal, his Champs League goal contributions are very good. Odd little player.

Qwiss Absolutely. But for me, when he's as good as he was in his best and injury free period, he's worth it.

Segway how good you are at your best isn't really the point though. For 2 years he's been at his best about 20-25% of that time, otherwise he is out or not at the top of his game. If you are going for a top 4 spot that works, if you are fighting for a title where every dropped point in the season is crucial then you need more consistency and more availability. Its the same with Partey, top of his game he's hard to find better but you don't get to see it regularly enough.

Look at Havertz and Rice. They've been ever present this season. Rice rarely has a bad game. Havertz didn't start the season well but his availability and hard work managed to push him through into top form. Thats the level we are at. I don't think we should be carrying players like Jesus and Partey going forward. They both have really big wages and don't contribute enough. We may also be stuck with them for that reason.

Qwiss I'm the biggest proponent of availability being a strength as you know. In Jesus defense, he does not appear to have plaguing injuries like the type of muscular issues that Partey deals with. Instead, he went to the World Cup with a bum knee, fucked it up and then came back to action a little too quickly.
If Mikel and Edu had managed to get another forward over the summer, maybe Jesus has opportunity for proper surgery and rest.

Qwiss I totally agree that we need players with who can keep fit but my point is that if his knee issues can be resolved in the summer, which it sounds like they can, then it would be a mistake to let him go. He's still only 27 so he should have several good years left.

BUT if the club assesses that he will continue to be injury plagued then it would be right to cash in for the right price.

I think this is an easier way to build quality squad depth, i.e. Keeping players who were bought to be starters who for whatever reason get usurped by someone better/more reliable, but still have possess the quality to positively contribute to the squad.

It's an easier sell to Jesus, Partey and Tomiyasu to be bench/squad players, when they know they are unreliable and rightly lost their place, then it is to sign equivalent talents from the market who are less likely to be sold on a bench/rotation role.

Qwiss Look at Havertz and Rice. They've been ever present this season

We previously signed a collection of semi-crocked players so it's good we've changed tack. Zinchenko, Partey, Tomiyasu and Jesus are proven part-timers you can't build a side around.

You might think a particular half-fit player is a great stopgap, substitute, rotation or cup option, but once you've developed another player in his place, you're looking at about 30% appearances on 100% wages. These guys should be viewed as somewhat expendable because they are.

I think if we're not relying on Jesus to be a regular starter and he's a depth option across the front line, I'm okay with that - even if he is an expensive one. My one concern is knees can be tricky things to resolve and get right (and I should know).. It is worrying that we're now 18 months past the World Cup and Jesus is still struggling. But if there's no market for him in the summer, this is all kind of moot anyway.

I'm wondering how much people think we should be able to sell him for with the uncertainty about his knee. I doubt that number is above the number where even more people will be having a moan about how bad we are at selling.

daredevil can we afford to have Partey and Jesus as squad members? They earn some of the biggest wages in the team. Once you have them as squad players every negotiation with a first team player, or even another squad team player starts with "well Jesus earns £250k and I'm as or more important than him". Eventually we go bust playing that game. There has to be a point where you say "ok that player is not as important as his wage bill suggests so we are happy to sell him". We also can't operate indefinitely as we have in the last few years where we just let these big players that we've paid huge money for run down their contracts and walk. Jesus and Partey are both in a place where you have to ask am I willing to give this guy a new, even higher paying contract? The club is being sensible to be looking for buyers. The only question for me is if we can find one.

Jesus came to try to claim a CF role but unfortunately for him all the challenges from his time at city are still present. Fitness issues, not a good enough finisher and better as a bit part squad player on the wing which was who he was at City. Keeping these types of players if fine but you accept they are going to be peripheral players and you need to find the key forward/winger who will take that position that you can rely on to be available and contribute the output consistently that we need.

Santi Cazorla was awesome in 12/13. Then he played through an ankle injury in 13/14 and was pretty mediocre. No one thought of him as anything more than a good squad player. Then he went right back to being awesome in 14/15 and 15/16.

Note that Jesus was still a monster after coming back from injury last season.

I think he just did too much too soon coming back from his arthroscopic procedure this year. I reckon there's a 70% chance he gets another arthroscopic procedure, he doesn't rush back and is straight back to being a monster again.

Arteta pretty emphatic in saying we have no plans to get rid of Jesus. I have to say instinctively I was pleased to hear it.

goon why were you happy to hear it? Anyway I don't expect Arteta to say any different. I mean, that basically halves the players value.

We've outgrown Jesus. He's a good player, but we can do better, clearly.

goon Gunnerblog started the Jesus story. He doesn't start much, his brother is Ransdales agent, I don't doubt it's true. I'm not a big fan of his opinions or vibe generally but he doesn't make stuff up.
