Claudius Why would you feel sorry for him? He made himself a lot of money. Broke into the ranks of men who coach big clubs. He is set for life.
Well, the world's full of melancholic billionaires these days. If this means Potter never manages a billion pound squad again, he's hardly going to be overjoyed.
Potter has given out various ideas about himself he seemed to believe. He wanted to be a rare case, a special managerial talent from outside the inner circles of top flight football, a modest, inclusive but canny guy who had built himself up from assistant roles on women's teams, to a degree in emotional intelligence, to being head-hunted by Chelsea to do the footballing equivalent of booking Spinal Tap's world tour, if Spinal Tap were also a corrupt corporation passing between the hands of gangsters.
It was a nice dream. As the Guardian's piece on him says today, English football actually needs a few managers like Potter, people who present the notion the job is about learned skills and can be carried out without being horrible.
That personal brand has been cratered by the public failure of both his technical and interpersonal skills, so I'm sure he's miserable. No doubt the massive Chelsea payout will help once it's negotiated.
