In Australia, the wedge was highly successful—the brutal border laws and policies were widely condemned of course, but the end result was the ALP spending ten years chasing the Liberals to the right on this issue until there was no daylight between them.
Of all right wing parliamentary parties in the English-speaking world, the Tories often seem to me to have an especial, peculiar, classed, excess of hatred for the poor and marginalised, to the point of almost seeming to be happy if people are dying or horrifically immiserated—that's relative to their equivalents like the Republicans (brutal, but casual about it) or the Liberal Party in Australia (pathetic and conniving, but more ashamed).
