And now we are spending as much anyone each summer so really I don't think we can keep pretending we are some financial minnow that can't compete.
Yes and we are suffering the consequences of our mistakes. Basically had to pay to get Auba out of door and Laca ran his contract down. Have no buyers for Pepe as things stand. Those players were not signed to be backup were they? We spent nearly £170m on Laca, Auba & Pepe and all three came with glaring faults, the only one somewhat living up to his price tag being Auba. Pepe has more than enough chances to impress and has not taken them. He's played 80 games for us, how many chances does he need? Ben White last I checked plays every game when fit. Laca has averaged 40+ games a season for us since joining. Played plenty of games with Auba.
Man City had four £45m+ players on the bench, we've probably got that many in total in our squad. Kalvin Phillips has been bought to be backup. My point is if we spend that kind of money we need them in our first XI. Also we are spending money now after years of chronic underinvestment in our squad, our whole squad is being overhauled due to this. I'm not saying we are some financial minnows but pretty obvious not even close to being on the same financial level as City.
