I'm normally against using exceptions (Benzema) to make a point. But I'm optimistic about Jesus if only for the fact that I don't see any other (or better) options for us.

You see I don't think thats true. They tried to make him a goal scorer, to give him that responsibility but he couldn't do it. He was supposed to be the successor to Aguero but wasn't up to it. Pep found ways to use him in spite of that because he's a good manager.

TBH IMO his talent is not in question, but none of the photos I have seen of him indicate to me he has any 'fire/confidence/determination in his eyes', and more so when you look at the likes of Neymar or Richarlison, even though I rate him ahead of the latter in terms of quality. I think Scamacca has 'it' but similarly I'm not sure about the likes of Nketiah or other CFs/WFs we have been 'linked' with.

Whilst it may seem a rather subjective and unquantifiable quality, IMO it is the sort of quality I want to see from the players in the spine of the team - the determination and self confidence to take responsibility to get the job done. IMO we've had far too many 'fair weather' players post The Invincibles, let alone also being key players in the team.

EDIT - reminds me of how we wouldn't pay 35m for Laca and then paid 51(?)m for him the next season.

Yeah fully agree. He completely lacks killer instinct. My worry is that Arteta likes guys like that.

I actually suspect they didn't. There were stories post Jan that the BoD would not allow funds to be released until a corresponding player had been sold as in a 1 forward Out, 1 forward In scenario, which explains why we have been so willing to let players depart for frakk all just to get them off the books. I had also seen comments made by the agents of some of our failed bids that when push came to shove we failed to be able to put the money on the table - Guimaraes later said it was why he ended up joining NUFC and not us, because we didn't/couldn't produce the funds.

What concerns me atm is despite being told we had our ducks lined up prior to the end of the season, we have not progressed in negotiations. Read a comment that we have been 'in talks' with Jesus' people for months, meanwhile TH are about to announce their 3rd signing. Thus far it feels very much like last season with our failed protracted negotiations for both a CM and CF in both transfer windows.

I'm not overly fussed if we miss out on jesus, but if we're gazumped at this point by Chelsea after edu has allegedly spent months working on this deal, it doesn't bode well for the rest of our dealings

It all feels very deja vu to last season's failed pursuit of a CM and CF.

I like Jesus. 2 years ago this would have been a dream signing for us.

It just doesn't make sense that we signed Nketiah then him. No plan B.

I'm not that enthused by this signing. I don't think he's that great a goal scorer like we would need. Also if it's going to require big money I don't think I'd be going for Jesus to spend it on I think it could be another dud signing of it costs us lots.
