I’m one of Arteta’s biggest fans but this is his first real test of the season.

He needs to:

1) Change things up on Wed. Drop Martinelli and perhaps Xhaka for Trossard and Jorghino respectively. Stop playing the same tired side which looked mentally and physically shot on Sat.

2) Better use of Tierney. Need to bring him off the bench sooner if we are playing low block teams. He can stretch teams better and will benefit/compliment our wingers much more when we need a goal.

3) Do not keep rewarding shit players with games/mins. Vieria I’m looking at you.

4) Needs to be more proactive with subs and make them a lot sooner. Don’t be afraid of carrying out subs at HT. On Sat Martinelli looked shit first half and should have been taken off a lot sooner.

5) Pray that Jesus, ESR and Nelson come back asap as we desperately need some new options as things are getting stale.

All well and good when we are winning and have momentum but it’s now the true test of a manager to get us out of shit when we have some adversity.

I blame todays loss on Arteta. Showed his immaturity/naivety as a manager. Far too reactive. Trossard should have come on a lot earlier. Basically this a bottle job make no mistake about it and most blame on Mikel.

I don't really agree - he's hooked players at half time before. I think he's just (rightly or wrongly) not fully confident of his options on the bench right now.

Don Pacifico I think this is right. My uncle makes the same criticism of him, but seriously look at our bench and Trossard is essentially all we have right now to make a change up top. It's not like there's an embarrassment of riches (which is why we should absolutely keep Balogun next season imo).

Fair that Trossard should have come on earlier but neither of these are horrendous errors.

Trossard scored last game and was chomping at the bit. It was the right time to play him.

I disagree - as ever with football management, I don't think the road to success is binary, there's more than one way to achieve long-term success. I personally would have gone with Trossard but that's not to say that showing faith in Martinelli and trying to play him into form isn't a legitimate tactic.

Arteta needs to keep learning fast. He's done brilliantly this season but the Villa match is crucial. He needs to correct 2 issues he's had to date. First he needs to win, if we don't it's another run of bad results and it becomes a theme. Secondly he needs to rotate and tweak. We've been figured out, it happens. City played Villa and then us with a new system. Arteta needs less of a big change but still he needs to surprise Villa with something.

Just a little to late with the sub again. Looking back on the match thread everyone knew the City goal was coming if we don't change something to take the ball for a second, eveyone but Arteta. And it has happened a few times now...
But still, no problem with him, he is learning and growing with the team, Top 4 is still a good season.

Can't blame lack of subs on not trusting players if the default is to keep playing the ones in bad form over the ones waiting in line. How can they become 'trustworthy' then?

This guy just does not learn does he? He never utilises his squad until he's forced to. Then you get performances like Tomiyasu's.

Fucking drop Xhaka. He's playing like shit again and I'm back to being sick of him. We need agility and deftness in addition to machine like athleticism in that role.

We also can't just use Eddie up front. Trossard false nine or give Martinelli a go.

As I said last night, the squad still has a few massive holes in it and we're a way off from having a full set that the manager trusts.

I disagree with a lot of what you've said, I think it's a bit melodramatic to be honest. You can't look at the progress we've made this season and say Arteta doesn't learn...

But the bit quoted above in particular - who is this alternative to Xhaka that is ready to play? You can critique the decision not to buy a replacement but realistically, there isn't anyone else currently available to do that job.

My worry is about the development, when he came here was not very good at subs and reacting and changing to things and I still don't think he is. Wet should have switched things up before this Martinelli just hasn't been effective for a long time and we still haven't rotated. Even in matches when it's been clear it's not working he's to slow

Don Pacifico Vieira. I am not impressed with what I've seen of him but he signed him and for fairly big money. Use your squad.

Obviously that means we're lightweight as hell with him, Odegaard and Jorginho but something needs to be different.

Maybe Trossard for Eddie and Nelson on the left.

And yes it's melodramatic but I'm pissed off at seeing the same issues when we're off the boil.
