This shows where we need to invest in then team, not necessarily in terms of position, but in experience and leadership.

Would anyone objectively look at Gabriel or Tierney and want them as captain now if it wasn't for our current situation?

They've certainly shown signs of leadership but they shouldn't be anywhere near that level of responsibility for their respective experience. Even moreso Odegaard.

I think a lot of these guys are new to the team, so you can't really give the captaincy to someone who's been in the team / here less than 1 year or even 6 months. Of the starters, that leaves Tierney, Gabriel, Partey and Saka. Out of those, Tierney is injury prone and in a battle with Tavares, Gabriel doesn't speak much English and Saka is too young. Naturally that leaves Partey.

Would probably give it to Laca as a short term fix right now, popular/respected in the dressing room even if off end of season.. and reassess in the summer.

Makes more sense than the Xhaka alternative = not a lot to choose from as all of the potential choices have their own draw backs.

I assumed that Laca was not included on the list simply because it is presumed he would be captain until he left.

I'd give it to Tomiyasu in the future personally. Such an intelligent and spirited bloke, and he's actually been available for all the games so far (touch wood). I can't see Tierney ever playing regularly which disqualifies him for me. He'd have been my choice otherwise.

I think it more underscores the disconnect between modern football and between fans' desires for a totemic leader character to be honest.

I think we should be looking towards a Saka captaincy even if not immediately. If not now then within the next 2 years. When you look at the team, who doesn't drop their head, who inspires, etc Saka is the one for me. He's so young now but even still I'd be tempted to just go straight for it.

It's a reflection of how young and fresh our team is more than anything, which is no bad thing. You just need someone who can deal with the responsibilities it comes with.

I think that would be really irresponsible personally. I know it looks like he's fazed by nothing but he's still a kid, let him play, develop and mature without that additional weight on his shoulders, he's already got more responsibility that he should have.

Feel like the captaincy question is far less important than settling the questions around Aubameyang to the benefit of Arsenal. The captaincy doesn't involve a £300k / week contract.

Fine we've picked up an encouraging victory here, but the way difficulties have been being handled with the squad remains reckless and I shudder to think where it ends.

Longer term it probably isn't as important an issue, provided we keep this group of players and that they continue to develop.

They'll be older, more experienced and have grown as a group. At the moment there is a lot of inexperience, a lot of recent turnover in the team, and it's still to properly settle as an 11. There's signs certain areas of the team, notably the defence, are settling well but the whole team is yet to gel and there will no doubt be more turnover in the next year. I feel they need leadership and a strong personality on the pitch at the moment, which might not be so important in two or three years. That's not to say that leadership comes in the form of a chest beating, shouty showman.
