Even when he's playing superbly Partey's impact on the midfield is usually subtle.

Good shout. Benefit of hindsight, but if we could have started Maitland-Niles and brought Ødegaard on for Partey, and Pépé for Laca at half time, I can see the defence getting better protection and us looking more dangerous in the second half.

I don't recall a good game with odegaard next to partey. I dont really like him in that role under this manager. he becomes even more passive, and artetas strictness around the role of an 8 means he's not allowed to go near the frontline. he spends most of the game in those deep corner pockets of midfield near the fullback

But if you play him as the 10 he drops back into the midfield most of the time and we just don't have a front 3 that can cope with that.

Definitely think we were weak in the middle today. Poor AMN must have no clue what he should do to keep his place after putting in two motm performances in midfield only to get dropped for a weak and underwhelming Lokonga both times. I feel he and Martin should have started. People have gone a bit sour on Ødegaard in the last two months but when he plays our chance creation goes up and the midfield becomes a lot more mobile. Maybe his future is deeper in the pitch but in the present he's the best playmaker option we have. It's unvelievable that we've fallen back into the Lacazette trap again. Bloke's a level cap if I've ever seen one.

Actually there's Smith-Rowe too. Either one is much better than Laca.

I agree. We've been winning with Laca so I get why we've stuck with it, but it needs to stop sooner rather than later. This is as good as it gets for him and it's not enough, time to give a player who's capable of more a run.

Laca as CAM works against sides who don't press high with intensity because we can get enough ball and time to work it forward for him to play the DLF role.
IMO part of the issue v the likes of LFC/MC is being able to get the ball forward often enough to make it viable. As such I'd think a DM DLP/ball winner role would be more effective than having a CAM/SS = 4141 rather than 4411.

At least the loss doesn't hurt us so far as our position on the table goes (we're still 5th), and we still have the opportunity to break into top4 as we play all 4 of MC, WHU, Wolves and MU before the next break after New Year's Day.
