flobaba Don't think Ten Hag is a bad coach for whatever it's worth. Think it's similar to the Emery situation. You either give him time and back him fully (which I don't think the Man U board has done), or you sack him now and bring in someone else to do the same job he's trying to do.

Really? I think the United board have backed him more than we backed Emery - they bought in all the players he wanted, supported him over players like Ronaldo and De Gea and spent £400m in the process. There's some drama around the ownership of the club but Ten Hag has generally been allowed to stamp his authority. Ultimately, he's recruited poorly and picked a fight with one too many players.

I think his own choices of player have been terrible. Think of the money they spent on Antony and Hojland for instance and then replace them with 2 half decent players of similar value, it'd transform that team. He arrived to a team with big players like Rashford and Bruno too but they no look completely lacking in motivation, to me thats a managerial issue, especially when the malaise is pretty consistent among their big stars. He's handled other players poorly too, Sancho is basically being bullied, stupid way to handle a huge asset and he destroyed Maguires confidence by benching him, letting everyone know he didn't like him but then didn't get him out to West Ham in the summer when a good offer was there.

He has recruited poorly alright but I think there's often an element of randomness about recruitment that we as fans don't sufficiently acknowledge. Sometimes you'll get a string of signings that work out well and sometimes otherwise, even if all your fundamentals and underlying work is solid. If the bad run of signings happens at the start of a manager's reign he's usually boned. I think Ten Hag is on the road to sacking but I wouldn't be surprised if he goes on and does well elsewhere and makes signings that work out better. I mean look at Emery. I think there's talent there as he has often managed to drag results out of United despite them being so shit, but his signings like Antony have fucked him and I don't think he'll get the time to go again.

It seems pretty clear that Ten Hag has had much more decision-making power regarding transfers than what Emery had at Arsenal. We straight up signed our most expensive player ever despite Emery not wanting him.

I don't rate Ten Haag anymore. A good manager should be able to follow through his philosophy and make the team play the way he wants especially after more than a year.

The way he says he can't play the attractive football Ajax does because his personnel can only play direct counter attacking, but 80% of his entire team is signed by him now. Doesn't square for me.

What do you look for in a manager these days? A forensic, detailed approach to tactics; charisma; an inclusive attitude that draws the best out of neglected players. Ten Hag's zero for three.

Guardiola, Klopp, Arteta, Emery, Postecoglou, Howe, De Zerbi (to list the other managers of clubs in the top eight, I'll stop at West Ham for obvious reasons, sorry Dave but you're a dinosaur) all have at least two of these traits.

I don't know why you'd rate ten Hag, he seems well out of his depth.

If Ten Haag gets sacked, goes to another team and does well again, then I am willing to accept the fact that the United job is a poisoned chalice. But he didn't help himself with all his decision making tbh, he was doing well last year when he tried to play high pressing attacking football, and then have the Ronaldo fiasco, then everything gone downhill from then once he succumbed to circumstances and started playing Ole's brand of football.

Ironically, once he left Ajax, they have absolutely gone to the gutters and all their fans want him back.

Clrnc at Ajax the manager pretty much doesn't decide anything in terms of transfers, does he? It's weird of United to hire a system manager who wasn't included in that part of the business and let him run rampant in the transfer market like this.

QuincyAbeyie agree. The infrastructure at Ajax was a big part of his success; that doesn't exist at United.

But it takes the manager to clap too. The infrastructure is still there but the next 3 managers at Ajax have flopped terribly.

Don Pacifico Yeah its still there. Overmars left before ETH, VDS left directly as a result of the terrible season Ajax suffered after ETH left.

Remember when fans laughed at us for signing White for £50m and when they signed Varane for £41m? Over the contract he has cost them more money and been a far worse player.

Moral of the story is never to trust R.Madrid when they sell an established player over 28. They knew Varane and Casemiro were physically finished, flogged both to Utd and both times they've got stung.
