Can Tavares challenge Tierney?

Tavares is such a prospect himself that if it is true Real want KT, we should be more than willing to sell.
I don't think the rumours have much basis tho.

I think that the Real Madrid rumor is complete BS.

Marcelo has not been anything more than a bench player for the last couple of seasons.

Ferland Mendy is pretty much the undisputed first choice left back and I don't think Real would spend massive amount of money to sign a backup left back.

Think the periods were Tierney is great are fewer than the periods where he isn't. He's not a problem at all but if we take care of striker and midfielder in the summer then backup RB and a starting LB would probably be my picks for future transfer windows, depending on how Tavares and Tierney play until then. That's of course not taking possible outgoings into consideration.

Bring Back Kerrea Gilbert

It's a position to keep an eye on, for sure.

We also really need to sort out right back. Tomiyasu isn't enough in terms of numbers and also at times we'll need variety with a swashbuckling right back.

I'd agree with that, I highly doubt R.Madrid are interested but a good offer comes in we should be seriously considering it. The injuries will catch up with him sooner or later.

Replace him with someone like Brighton's Cucurella who looks a player and a half in the making.

Whatever you think about Tierneys fitness its become abundantly clear that the answer is not Tavares.

It was his first start in four months. He's extremely inexperienced and rusty as hell, when he got a run out early on he looked better than Tierney did for large parts this season.

Problem is regardless of either player with the coach and our horrible squad management, our bench is useless 9 out of 10 matches and whenever we rotate we look like deer in headlights. I'd still argue Tierney is a bigger problem than Tavares, his injuries are not whatever but a massive hindrance to us and would be even if he were the best full back in the world. I just checked transfermarkt and it says he's missed 80 matches or 421 days so far in his career and that's before his latest surgery. Absolutely shocking record for a 24 year old.

He's been hard done by for minutes but he'll never be good enough to be first choice for us. He just doesn't have it in him.

He's 22 but plays like an 18 year old who hasn't had much exposure to men's football. His concentration is poor and attitude is worse. He's just not worth persisting with.

His poor performances aren't just a result of lack of playing time. He's just not up to it.

He does look like a power horse in his first few apps. Remember some people said he was better than Tierney and created a thread?

Benfica fans were delighted to see the back of him because he is brainless, but I won't give up on him yet. He is raw and positionally all over the place but those can be taught and come with experience

He may be a bit too dumb to be a great player. Certainly looks that way when he gets a run out at the moment.

Tavares seems like someone who will be heavily punished for every mistake on the field.

I'm not sure if that's down to bad luck (due to past karma) or him just being absolutely inept as a defender.

Tavares is just really really raw, it's not an easy decision to let him start or not. I would err towards starting him though.

Has he even started 40 top flight games? Think writing him off would be really unfair, and a real shame.

He hasn't and it would be.

I can understand qs being hesitant to give him a run out in a crucial part of the season which is why I'd consider dropping Saka there instead but definitely claiming he's not good enough is ridiculous after his first start in half a season. The most talented players in the world can produce some absolute stinkers in circumstances like that. You just need to know if there's something worth persisting with and in his case he's shown plenty, athleticism technique and attitude are there just needs consistent application which is always the last thing to come especially to rotation players.

One thing's for certain if Arteta rearranges the team in order to not start him at this point his career here's done.

Not to forget the LB role when Tavares was signed was more akin to playing as a free WB to get forward and provide width in the final 3rd as being 1 of those 5 channels in attack, and the role now is chalk and cheese in comparison.

That wasn't his first bad game. He was hopeless when we were knocked out of the cup too. If you think he's going to blossom into a first XI Arsenal player more power to you but what I see is a 22 year old with great physical gifts and not enough else to make him a top class player.

I think you have to start him against Brighton personally. Maybe in the bigger games you play Tomi out there or something but you have to at least give him a chance to be useful as he was earlier in the season.

In fairness to him, he's a little unlucky to come in from the cold in a game where everyone else also shits the bed. Ideally you'd have Gabriel protecting him rather than exposing him.

I see it the other way around, I think having Tavares in set the tone and made the defence nervous. Obviously not rotating Tavares in at times makes that worse but thats hindsight, dealing with the hear and now I'd just leave him out. Maybe bring him off the bench and ease him back into it.
