White was very good on the ball, finally.

Ramsdale is superb. I love that kid.

Lokonga needs work - passing and awareness of time on the ball.

Saka very average I thought.

esr, white, Gabriel, ramsdale, nuno and laca were all very good. everyone else was solid too. hard to get a read on whether this set up is the solution based on 1 game. we've seen laca and auba start together and many times it hasn't worked. keep doing whatever is working I suppose

starting CAM. Or rather always ending up there, doesn't really matter where he starts if that's where he always is. The clear indicator though is that he is often in the CM when they have the ball rather than pressing up top.

you really do need to actually watch the matches at some point mate.

yeah he should be able to stream from his phone even if he isn't near a computer. or at least download the games after. i use to do that way back in the day before games became readily available in the USA.

I don’t think Laca and Auba is an issue if Auba stays up top and Laca plays as a 10. As it is Laca is looking good and Ode is struggling a little, so we can keep it as is until it naturally turns.

I made the decision not to do so after last season and did not renew my Optus subscription, & just watch the highlights posted on the internet.
It's rare that I am in any position to watch games 'live'.

As for Laca's positioning & role I think the key difference this time was both ST being central rather than having PEA starting from wide, let alone the options it gives to other positions in terms of roles regardless of if it was 442/4231 etc.

Very pleased with what I saw tonight. That's the sort of swagger and aggression I want to see us play with every week.

Really encouraging, and I'm hoping this is a sign that games like the previous two, rather than Arteta being cautious, were down more to this being a new team and young players that are going to have to go through some hard games and rough spells to learn and grow into better players and a stronger team.

Onwards and upwards. Let's see what the next game brings, but this was good.

The problem is that arteta does this in one game and then goes into the next game with his typical tentative shit.
I really think laca made a huge difference today. He deserves another start.

I'd say we go with both Laca and PEA starting up top as we know Laca doesn't last a full game but he adds too much to come on as sub for the last 20 mins.

We played really well in that first half last night but I kept feeling like we needed that second goal before half time and luckily it came. Villa re-adjusted at half time and if hadn't got that second goal I think it would have been a very different game. I think thats where we are as a team, sometimes these things go your way and sometimes they don't. Its why we'll struggle to find consistent form.

Compared to the end of last season there are a lot of players to really like in this first 13 or so now. Love Ramsdale, Tomi, ESR, Saka. Aambi has good attitude as well, and Nuno could be a cult favourite too.

We are quite fragile as a team. Players need to show the conviction to keep playing the same way regardless of scoreline.. if Villa equalise, could have been a different story... hopefully that will come this season with time and consistent team selection.

I wouldn’t mind that sort of inconsistency though, it’s sort of what you’d expect from a young team. But we need to be able to sustain at least 35-40 mins of pressure and intensity in the first half and most of the time it will pay off with a goal or two.

Then we need to be able to be a little more effective on the counter in the second half when energy levels drop and teams try come on to us.

I'd be content with the old Wenger-style "leading by two and still being afraid of losing the match" feeling for now instead of the feeling that you just can't imagine us scoring a goal.
