This criticism is levied at every International manager. What playing style or tactics do you genuinely expect an International manager to impose when they barely get any time to develop one?
Half the time club fans are berating International managers for picking their best players for useless International games that come around once every quarter, and the other half the time the same club fans are berating International managers for supposedly not getting the best out of them and developing an excellent system. Make it make sense.
Southgate has done a good job. He doesn't have a better group of players than other top national sides, despite the ludicrous biannual hype job that happens every time we reach a major tournament.
England have good players, but so does Brazil, Argentina, France, Germany, Spain, Italy, Croatia, Holland etc. England are by no means clear of any of those nations, so finishing runners up or top 4 amongst a group of 10 serious contenders is a good outcome. Unless, of course you've bought into the hype job that it's a golden generation and they should be winning trophies, because they are the best National side in the world.
