agree. early penetrative passes haven't been a major trait of the arteta regime, even during these recent months. still feels like the ball must follow a heavily scripted path through the team before a chance is created

That's because CoNtRoL BaLl doesn't work like that. Tactics from the onset are if you can move the ball into a dangerous area with seven or eight players behind the ball fine, otherwise just keep moving it from side to side until maybe an opposing defender slips.

Have to give it to ofty he was right when he said Arteta isn't a defensive coach, he has no special ability to coach a defence he's just extremely negative and has no balls to play attacking football. He'll never allow his players to take any risks because he doesn't trust his players which ultimately comes down to him knowing deep in his heart that he's a fraud. And like any other fraud when shit goes south he's immediately back to blaming everyone else to save his hide.

Have to disagree on one point there Jones, I don't believe any part of Arteta believes he's a fraud. He seems to think our failures are everyones fault but his own. I don't think any part of him believes he's the problem. In fact we know he thinks he's the solution.

Yeah could be, will always be speculation what he feels like about himself. There are narcissists that have deep rooted insecurities but put on an act towards others and themselves and others who genuinely believe they're infallible, either way neither is a good look for a man who's in charge of a squad of young football players.

Only issue with this is with Partey out it all resumes back to where we were before, with Xhaka as the main conduit from Defence and through the middle 3rd in transition.

Off topic here but IMO the issue re space is IMO very much what we should be looking to as being AW's Legacy in regards to our style of football = the creation and exploiting of space.
I remember one a Neville's early match reviews of a game we played v MU(?) in the Cazorla era, and he made a comment about our movement creating a pocket of space he referred to as being 'Arsenal space' particularly during The Invincibles Era, and how since then we don't look to make runs or play the ball into those areas.
IMO too much of what we saw after the move and beyond IMO is more tiki-taka than Barca, where possession is considered king but has simply become a defence to avoid conceding.

Considering what sort of player we require, and I think we can look at LFC to get some indications, particularly in the differences in the roles between Firmino as the closest to Lacazette as a link with the midfield, and what is seen when they have Mane or Jota at CF as both have continued to both score and assist and both a very different types of payers to Firmino.

The question is about how the latter 2 players score their goals = is it during build-up play as seen with Firmino, or is it as more of a pressing role and being in position higher up the pitch to take advantage of turn-overs?

What about someone like Zaniolo?
He fits the profile in terms of age and talent and is in his first season back from knee injury.

Zaniolo was arguably the Italian talent of his generation, but you can't buy guys who have done their ACL. In modern history I can't think of many examples of players who didn't lose a dimension after tearing their ligaments, and Zaniolo has done it twice now. The knee injury he's back from is his second ACL. He tore his first one in 2020.

There's another one of those generational talents at Roma right now in El Shaarawy. He's having a good season by normal standards, but the kind of career he was destined to have was as one of the best forwards in Europe. He'll never get close to that level. I think the same will be true for Zaniolo. He'll tail off in the next few years, probably after another string of serious injuries.

Bugger - had seen he had scored a hat-trick to eliminate Bodoe/Glimt.
He seems to pick up a lot of yellow cards of late = 5 in his last 10 games.
I remember Wish Listing El Shaarawy before AW departed - thought he'd disappeared to some place like Turkey / Greece / China.

Might be worth a punt if we think he'll make even an 80% recovery. You lose a bit of explosiveness and agility, but his technique and brain would still surpass a lot of what we are currently working with.

If you asked roma fans, he's been crap prior to the hattrick. I can see the intrigue in getting him but perhaps having more consistent form would be better. He only had 2 Serie A goals before the hattrick. That's as much as Eddie.

Zaniolo is more of a midfielder than a striker.
