He looks unflashy, but very serious and hardworking - a theme of this summer's signings - the anti-Ainsley Maitland-Niles. He also looks very, very good one-v-one because of a good mix of speed, agility, stength and anticipation. Lools a good player. Not sure what he'll offer as an overlapping right back though.

in most clips he looks alert and committed, and the two footedness should help him not getting pinned on the touchline like bellerin and chambers do

Could be spin but the athletic article from today suggests RB was high priority right from the get-go. Aarons and Lamptey dismissed because of height. Tyler Adams targeted but didn't want to leave (don't get that one as he's same height as Aarons). Its feasible all things were in play 1) testing existing RBs 2) completing RB outgoings 3) targeting a worthwhile RB

Looks like I'm right though. The start to our season made it clear our current options is unfeasible so we went out to Panic buy in the last min.

Shocking they couldn't recognise how poor our options are and got someone in early in the window

Article also further explained we wanted someone that can tuck into a back 3 instead of going forward on the right. And also to cover for White. Make sense now why we bougut another CB

This is obvious. We could have gotten Emerson easily if we wanted to but looks like Arteta wants more of a CB for his system. Hope there's some genius tactics in the making and we don't regret passing him to Spurs instead.

What system? We are going to be so dull to watch. And predictable too. I just don't see Arteta giving players the freedom even though he says differently. Just the other day he alluded to Ødegaard being a player who thrives with freedom. He might be the only one who gets a bit of it.

this guy looks really promising, good in the air, strong, good with his feet.

but the question then is, why did we spend £50m on white, when we got this guy for £16m and hes a centerback?

we have been complaining about chambers because hes a CB that has been playing RB. this guy looks more athletic, but hes not a natural attacking RB, and given how much emphasis we put on our fullback play, that is what the team needs.

so then we're back to the question of, why did we buy white when we could have bought this guy for that position and then spent £30m on, say, emerson, who is an actual right back.

so we could have had this guy and emerson for the price of white.

which makes me think we really dont have a recruitment strategy at all, we're just kind of winging it and making it up as we go along. great way to run a club

When it came to right-back, Arsenal had targeted a very specific profile. They have not been looking for a right-footed Kieran Tierney, a player intent on regularly bombing on and arriving in the final third. Arsenal were linked publicly with moves for Norwich City’s Max Aarons and Brighton’s Tariq Lamptey. Internally, however, there were concerns over their height and ability in the air.

Identifying a signing for this area has not proved straightforward. RB Leipzig’s Tyler Adams is much admired at London Colney but is intent on remaining in Germany for now. Kieran Trippier, who was keen on a return to the Premier League from Atletico Madrid, did not fit the club’s strategy of recruiting from a younger age profile.

With Hector Bellerin keen on a move back to Spain, Arsenal explored the possibility of a swap deal for a full-back from that league such as Sergino Dest or Emerson Royal. Talks regarding Royal progressed furthest, with recruitment staff struck by a physical profile that seemed tailor-made for the Premier League. Coaching staff, however, were concerned he would not fit the system.

Arsenal have been looking for a full-back who can tuck into central areas in possession, enabling Arsenal to build up in a back three if so desired. They were also seeking someone who could combine with and cover for Ben White — a partner for the £50 million signing on that right flank.

Tomiyasu is seen as the ideal kind of “hybrid” player. He has played predominantly at right-back and centre-half, and has also filled in as a right wing-back. Bologna’s asymmetrical system emulates Arsenal’s in that the team defends in a back four, but shifts to a three in possession. At 6ft 2in, Tomiyasu has the height and aerial presence Arteta was looking for. He is also relatively two-footed, meaning that if he is pressed, he is able to turn infield and pass with his left foot.

our master genius is inventing hybrid formations and playing 8-d chess, while most of our team cant execute simple 8 yard passes. im just at a complete loss

hilarious. we struggle with the basics, but are going to pull off more complicated systems.

Funny thing is that Maitland-Niles is as good as anyone we can reasonably sign for a role like that, but he's somehow fifth in the pecking order. We play midfielders, centrebacks and leftbacks ahead of him.

its also funny that we are worried about our fullbacks ariel ability, when we've also signed a bunch of centerbacks who can't head the ball either. so we want our fullbacks to be strong in the air, but we paid £50m for a CB who can't head the ball.

the damage arteta has done to this club in the short, medium and long term is astounding. hes conned the board into splashing out £100m+ on specialized players for his completely unrealistic, broken football vision.

Exactly. Everything I've read Tomiyasu the player is encouraging. Everything about how the team will adapt to his arrival sounds shit.
