I think it's fair to say we'd all be surprised having a manager come in and turn the richest, most talent packed team in the Ligue 1 play on the counter.

They're not really a team who sit back waiting to counter, just very direct and vertical similar to Barcelona under Lucho.

I read that during preseason. I think Clrnc may be referencing the buy in from Neymar, and how Messi seems to have settled in. I think that was the toughest problem for any manager. To get Neymar playing for the team and not for himself. Once that clicked, the whole team has unlocked a different level. They will be real favorites for the champions league this season if they keep this form and attitude up.

Yeah, the 3 players felt like they love playing with each other and no longer play for themselves.

Jones is right, I was referencing their directness and verticality. It's crazy how many times a few passes led them behind Lille and straight at goal. 7 goals didn't flatter them, if they played more seriously they would have have deserved a double digit win.

To be honest, thinking about it it's somewhat similar to how invincibles played.

Did you watch the Madrid derby yesterday. Absolutely shit dismissal at 90 minutes while Atletico was chasing the equalizer. Atletico player put hands on his opponent in the penalty area and the referee deemed it a yellow card offense. But you see stuff like this in La Liga every weekend. It's hard to get upset about referees anywhere.

All I’m saying is both of these are daft decisions. There is often an idea that Premier League referees have a unique incompetence when actually they’re just humans making errors like we all do everyday. Only difference is our bullshit isn’t in view of 100million people who care deeply about the outcome of a game between 22 chaps

I've seen enough football in Europe's top leagues to strongly disagree with this. England's refs are special, and I don't think it's just incompetence either. And I don't know what you do at work Claude but I sure as shit don't make any errors like they at work, if I or anyone I knew did they wouldn't be in a job anymore even without 100 million people watching.

Short of having an AI algorithm refereeing the match, there will always be mistakes. Refereeing is a thankless task and I can't for the life of me understand why anyone would want to do it.

Go to any amateur match and you'll see people abusing refs. Go on any fan forum from AC Milan to Timbuktu FC, and you'll see herds of fans thinking the refs are out to get them.

Instead of sitting on the sidelines criticising, the critics should go out there and show us all how it's done.

You literally constructed the stupid opinion that "refereeing shouldn't be subject to any human error" and then argue against these people who don't exist.
There are more options than no human errors and a ton of human errors. What's being wished for is fewer of them, especially in clear cut cases like the Mendy one where a miracle had to happen for an entire team of refs to come to that decision.

What’s being wished for is a pipe dream. It’s coming from people who have never had to referee a game of 22 elite athletes running into each at high speed and you only get only perspective of incidents, if you even see them. Expecting perfection in those circumstances is unreasonable and fantastical.

No one is expecting perfection, just better than the nonsense being served up. The Problem with the PGMOL is a complete lack of accountability, it’s a cushy job for life until you decide to retire. Make a massive error? Don’t worry, we will make sure no one can say a bad word against you. Doesn’t matter if you’re average, bad or terrible, you’re one of us.

Also, the example Cla ude put forward doesn't exactly tell the full story. The player who got his marching orders had just been warned for some fuckery he was involved in barely 5 minutes earlier. Then he goes in there and gets into a tussle with Dani Ceballos who makes the most of it.

It could have been overlooked by the ref, but the player had a big hand in how things transpired. It's similar to the sort of reds Xhaka used to get once upon a time (knock wood).

I don't think the PGMOL lacks accountability. They mainly lacked integrity as Wenger once put it.

All the decisions favour certain clubs generally and it's no surprise. They are using the system to manipulate results.

I am a trained and licensed referee (currently Grade 7 but I was Grade 6 when I relied on the income to pay rent). I've reffed dozens of games and been an assistant on more, from U5s to U19s. I've eaten untold buckets of shit served up by angry parents and rabid fans, including many outright death threats, racist abuse, etc. I could ref a game better than most PL match officials with a fucking blindfold on. It's not about "mistakes", it's about acting in good faith with a genuine effort to enforce the rules of the game while preserving the spirit of the same. PL refs are not doing that, and haven't done so for quite some time. They believe they are there to "manage" the game and take charge of proceedings, rather than to facilitate the game on behalf of the other stakeholders (players, coaches, fans). It's a philosophical problem and they need someone to step in and force them to change - it's not going to come from within because they are driven by ego and bitterness. The multiplying factor is their incompetence, which I personally believe comes as a symptom of their faulty approach, which is all about discipline, respect, and control. It's terribly old-fashioned and completely out of step with the contemporary state of the game.

Of course, they do - hardly anything happens to them and when they own up to a mess nothing gets changed. Maybe a ref gets suspended but he'll be right back making the same mistakes. Also, if they were more accountable the lack of integrity would be questioned a lot more openly.

On the other note, as much as I agree that refereeing is hard to do, the advent of VAR has shown how many of the errors are just down to poor judgment. Even if you dismiss Odegaard on Eriksen as arguable, Romero on Cucurela was so blatant the decision-making amounted to a joke.
