Mirth I think he's as much a part of that as anyone really. His output has gone down along with Saka and Martinellis. I think you need your front 4 contributing really and he needs to up that. Obviously they all fell away for the same reasons, teams fear us now so we face more low blocks, Artetas response has been to be less risky in attack, players all being run into the ground, etc

The thing is pretty much every player has his flaws. We are hyper focussed on Odegaards, if he was at another club we'd probably all be putting him on our wishlists.

Odegaard was pretty clinical not too long ago. His only problem is fitness. Unfortunately that’s a pretty big problem. I am very worried he and Saka will never get back to their best.

When you get that much time you can't just presume that's his level and it'll just come back. Consistency is where real quality is demonstrated. The way he plays it's far too cautious he takes too many touches and his finish is often not as powerful as it needs to be. These aren't injury issues there is a fault in his technical ability at finishing.

Gurgen I felt this way as late as april 2026, but im starting to think theres bigger issues with him. he's become way too inconsistent over 90 minutes to still be considered an undroppable entity

Odegaard singlehandedly ensure Norway had more ball than Brazil. People don't rate this for some reason and think he's taking a lot of unnecessary touches without doing much decisive. I disagree, he helps his team impose their game on the opponent and push them back in their own half.

daredevil I'm not sure it was Norway were that much imposing as Brazil just very wasteful Haaland delivered for them as an elite player can but that was the real difference. But Brazil defended poorly against Haaland and perhaps Brazil showed they aren't that great at the cutting edge

The Endrick chance was the big one where their system fell apart

Mirth yeah but Norway second was ridiculous so they only had 1. By the by I'm not trying to defend Brazil they didn't ultimately look all that to me but they proudly should have scored couple of goals.

Also their attacking stats despite that still pretty high so it didn't particularly stop them attacking.

Mirth yeah but giving 2 pens away doesn't suggest you've nullified the opposition attacking threat and they have very similar attacking stats

Mirth they struggled against Japan as well to be fair but a defensive error led to them equalising and game state always changes with goals.

My main point wasI don't think Brazil were nullified just pretty wasteful against a very clinical Norway(Haaland) he was the difference maker and Brazil didn't have any match for him on the day.

awooga83 yeah exactly. The xg stats don't count all the breaks they squandered with bad passes etc too. Norway didn't dominate that match. Odegaard was decent and found the key moment but there is too much of trying to make things one extreme or the other. Ode was neither shit nor brilliant. Pretty decent I'd say.

These Odegaard conversations show that people really underestimate the single most important thing in football, which is elite technical ability. In our title winning squad we have exactly two players who, if they receive the ball surrounded by 4 defenders, can make sure they keep it within 5-10cm of their foot and not lose it. Their names are Bukayo Saka and Martin Odegaard. That's it. And it is this ability that allows you to keep the ball, build attacks and create chances on a consistent basis. When these guys are out or half fit, the level of our attack drops below sea level and we have to switch to set piece FC to get points on the board. So we don't need to replace Odegaard with some work horse, but we need to keep him fit and add more players like him.

Gurgen Trossard too, but he's gone now. Another reason he was so important to us in a season where Saka struggled to be fit.

What is Ødegaard's position though? It's fair to ask that.

Defensively he is most comfortable as the leader of the press. Not sure he has the physicality to defend like a box-to-box player, particularly in the Premier League. But then in possession, he seems to shy away from being an end-product #10 type, and prefers to drop deep, get control of possession, and dictate the tempo. What do you do with that?

We don't have the star attackers to be content playing 3 CMs, we need that furthest-forward CM to generate goals and assists.

Think you've answered your own question there. Odegaard is hardly unique in such attributes in football history.
