What's killing Odegaard this season is his shot. Usually when a leftie is exceedingly one footed they make up for it with a fierce shot or exquisite placement. Odegaard has had neither for a long while.

Onana almost dived over his shot near the end of the game and earlier United's wall were on their way down when Odegaard's 5 mph tummy tickler bounced off them. His all round game has generally been better in the last couple of matches but his shooting technique and composure around the box are still in an appalling state.

Is Odegaard any more one-footed than Rice, Saka or any other comparable top players around that level? I don’t think so, it’s only ever picked up when a player is left-footed. The only time I recall a right-footed player being singled out is Bellerin.

Agree, his ball striking is very inconsistent and it means his finishing is Havertzesque at times. With his goal scoring off, he's sort of like a modern day Hleb. Still massively important to us though given he's the only attacking player at the moment whom the ball reliably sticks to in tight spaces around the opposition area.

His shot's a problem, but bring a couple of productive forwards into our XI and Ødegaard would be a stat machine again. Starting with getting Saka back. Øde's been leading the league in "assists gone to waste" numbers ("expected threat" and so on) which is what his performances look like to the eye.

Claudius maybe, but these were WC qualifying games, Arteta definitely didn't have to request anything like that in order for him to play. 😆

This season has been a very poor one for him although there have been things going on. To me this starts to be a worry because the level we are seeing from him at the moment is not enough for what we need to challenge for the title and other trophies. Hopefully he can come back next season but he would be a player I would begin to consider what do we do if he doesn't get back to the level we need in the early part of next season and what would it mean for our team and ambitions.

Do we think he's not significant enough that it wouldn't really impact us or have we planned a lot on him being at that level.

People underestimate the impact of a nasty ankle injury. It affects such a big part of your body and often people never fully recover. I agree he's been far below his level but we should give him a chance to recover before writing him off. The decision to let him play in those Norway games will always baffle me.

Gurgen I'm not suggesting moving on to be clear I think we see now next season goes but for the club they should be contingency planning what happens if he maintained this level next season which is a possible outcome and do we need to recruit to try to migrate that risk. Rather then do what we did last year and bank on players who had some red flags against them and come unstuck if it doesn't work out.

If he had been merely decent last season then I'd be very worried about his current level (which is undeniably not where it should be) but he wasn't - he was unreal. Backing him to be back to his best next season and to make those that are suggesting he needs moving on to look very silly.

But yes, clearly something wrong at the moment. Decision making and weight of pass are just not there right now. I think he's aware he's not performing to the level we've come to expect and he's overthinking most things.

awooga83 it would be incredibly stupid of the club to leave Odegaard as a single point of failure for the first team given that's what they did last summer and have paid handsomely for doing so. I'm not sure I've seen anything from Nwaneri this season that suggests he is a potential answer either (obvs, not saying you said that).

Ode has never been about winning games by himself, even in his prime. In fact few of our players are - maybe Declan, Raya and the 2 centre backs. Not even Saka wins games by himself.
