Southgate making this public yesterday basically ends his England career while Southgate is in charge. Everyone knows White doesn’t want to be selected but going out and making this public is just them trying to shift the blame from themselves onto the player. Southgate knows exactly what happened so saying he doesn’t know the exact reason is just bullshit and he has got what he wanted which is a media pile on.

White has played under the most demanding coaches like Bielsa & Arteta but he’s not had a problem with a single coach and never any complaints about his attitude.

JazzG Southgate gave it away after denying there was any problem between White and Holland. He said he will always back his key staff. In this context, he would be backing Holland against White. The question is how did he back Holland. Did he ask White to apologise?

Burnwinter Given what they've been doing since, if it brings us back into the major trophy winners' executive washroom, I'd be inclined to forgive them.

Aside from his dodgy history, it would've been such a bloody mess for us, far worse than Chelsea if Usmanov had become our owner. I wonder if David Dein sees the silver lining in having failed to make it happen while he's out trimming the roses at his manor. Wenger's role, and Gazidis's, in all that are also cast in a different light.

Dein played a massive part in turning this club around and deserves huge amount of credit for that. But his behaviour at the end like you said doesn’t cover him in glory. Funnily enough I think he was the one bought the Kroenke’s and Usmanov into the club!

Like you say glad we didn’t have Usmanov, Kroenke’s for all their faults are not in it for a quick buck like a lot of these American owners. They want to build the club and see it as a long term asset so will take a longer term view on things.

Nothing wrong with wanting to make a bit extra money but the rushed manner the Super league was announced was always going to fail. Isn't is ironic that a Conservative government threatening clubs is probably what made them back down...

However I would say I think the Super League for me is a stupid idea for English clubs because it favours the European clubs more. The PL is a far bigger attraction and as the top clubs aren't able to hoard all the money it makes the league a lot more interesting. The big clubs in Spain and Italy have taken most of the money and in the end harmed the league, they are now paying the price for that.

I do think it is very important to have the threat of a Super League to keep those cunts in UEFA in check as well.

The "doesn't like football" thing is weird. I can't remember the exact quotes so may have got it wrong but wasn't it just that he always loved playing, but didn't really watch it a lot and didn't support a club growing up largely because his parents weren't really into sport so there wasn't a family team? Don't think it was ever that he didn't like it, just wasn't obsessed with it off the pitch which granted is probably unusual for players at the top level. From my own experiences, albeit at low social levels, it's not completely unusual for people to enjoy playing a sport but not be fanatical about watching a certain team/player.

invisibleman18 you’re spot on. It’s an insane thing to beat the kid with. So he has a healthy relationship with his work where he focuses when he’s required to and then disconnects otherwise. Sounds good to me. But the talksport types have taken that to be a crime.

Don Pacifico Not quite sure why Southgate would claim White has no problem with his coaching team if this was bound to come out. It's now both a false claim and poor public relations.

I'm not sure I consider the specific incident that big a deal on Holland's part mind, but it probably reflects a pattern of greasing up players from specific clubs while targeting those from other clubs … as per that rumour the England setup was anti-Brighton for some reason (why?).

Fuck 'em anyway. With any luck Southgate gets the chop after the Euros. This England generation is overdue to win something and he's getting in the road of that at this point.

Burnwinter this was already public information before Southgate’s little speech last week. The Athletic did an exposé.

I think Southgate suspected he was finding himself in a difficult position due to the indifferent form and fitness of Trippier, James and TAA ahead of a major tournament. So he calculated and threw White under the bus with evidence against him and in favor of his assistant. And it’s worked beautifully- as pundits and fans on newspaper forums have largely opposed White.

I do wonder what it does to his relationship with the players. If the Athletic story is true, then Holland just lacks tact. I can see why both sides would dig in, suggests a low emotional intelligence environment
