There's a few interconnected considerations, I think. White often gets a sub, which I think is the plan. We like to end the game with a fresh RB. We are also looking to develop understandings between our best players, while maintaining the right balance. There's also the longer term view, which Arteta has mentioned many times now. We need to get these guys ready to play twice per week every week. We don't want to be blindsided if they can't handle it, so we have to play them through the mental fatigue to prove they can cope physically (both to the manager and to themselves). Only way to get there is to get there.

No Man City, Man Utd or Liverpool defender has as many minutes in the league this season as White. And he has less than Gabriel and Saliba.

Qwiss I just randomly searched a few defenders from those teams (Van Dijk, Alexander-Arnold, Ruben Dias, Luke Shaw, Kyle Walker) and all but Walker have played more minutes in all competitions than White, and a couple by some distance. Limiting it to the PL seems arbitrary, especially as it negates the exact point I was making.

I looked at a few and it seems like they only pass White in overall minutes if you include the world cup and other international games which obviously their club managers have no control over.

Qwiss I still don't see how that has any real bearing on the conversation. Why does it matter who selects them? I'm sure the physios are carefully tracking minutes played, and I doubt it makes much of a difference to them.

If anything the fact that White had a nice little break means he'll have had a nice reset and therefore be able to take a heavier load of mins.

I've said before though, I think people are a little too eager to explain why a player might suffer from a drop in form. There's any number of reasons why you might get it, or there might be no reason at all.

The only thing you can say for certain is that if you're unexpectedly challenging for the title against a behemoth of a team then it becomes very difficult to not be short sighted and give yourself the best chance of winning the next game.

He’s Mr 7/10 but sometimes needs to improve against the tricky wingers in the league. Was poor v Spurs last week and Mitoma took him to the cleaners last season v Brighton at home.

I still think he’s better as a CB than a RB which is not his natural position.

What I do like about him is that he is durable and hardly gets injured (touch wood). Seems like a managers dream (unless your Gareth Southgate).

Great header, good goal. Added gloss to a good team performance.

Still don't like how limited he is on and off the ball. He's a regular 6/10 in my estimation, which I guess isn't terrible. Just, you know, basic.

He's generally reliable without being outstanding because he's a CB being converted to an inverted RB.

I really like Ben. Guy does everything at a very good level, is generally solid and has the energy to go up and down the pitch to support Saka. He's one of those players you don't realise how reliant you are on them until they're missing.

He's underrated but as has been pointed out many times, his movement, the timing of his overlaps and his understanding with Saka are unexpectedly vital to our attack.

benny blanco is a key renewal. he's a great player to have in the squad. saw an interview with one of the players, and they were asked who you'd want in the foxhole with you, and they said white. he played through some pretty substantial muscle injuries late last season as well allegedly.

Yep, I either saw the same interview, or a different one in which much the same thing was said. He's regarded as the toughest nut we've got. Mind you, if anything that suggests we need to rotate him a bit more, as his form deteriorates back half of the season due to the niggles and fatigue.

As was pointed out in the post-match analysis of the derby, in both this season's and last season's instalment of the fixture, goals have resulted from the space created by his relatively infrequent overlaps, in part because Saka's geared to go when White drifts past him like that.
