I'm still to be convinced. He's a joy on the ball but he racks up way too many nervous moments - fouls in the box, not clearing corners, not winning headers. Part of me wonders if Tomi next to Gab would've been more solid from a CB pov. That said, I'm willing to give him some time. He certainly seems to compliment Gabriel quite well.

Tomi and Gab would probably be a better pairing, but we don't have another decent RB so I'd just keep playing like we do now.

I'd wager that our distribution from the back would be inferior if we tucked Tomiyasu inside - White was making some decent plays yesterday and it's clear he's been brought in to start moves from the back.

Yes, the most consistent chain when we were heavily on top was White-Xhaka-Oodegard.

And we spent £50m on White. It'd be insane to bench him now. We have to back him and hope it works out.

Exactly. No need to act like hes been flawless for that reason though, he had a decent game against a Kane who's been piss poor and still almost gave away a pen. Looked a lot better than his earlier games and we can hope that the three guys surrounding him can shield him until he grows into the role.

Yeah I agree, people just need to accept his flaws at the moment and hope he improves. I feel the over-hyping of him just adds to backlash when he makes mistakes.

Yeah that definitely don't help. Tbf I started the Rio comparison early in the window but he got overhyped massively afterwards he was bound to disappoint

With the energy and engine Tomi has, he would be a waste at CB tbh.

We don't have a good RB anyway so unless we sign one Tomi has to be the first choice.

I think the hybrid back3 works well with White in the middle to act as a sweeper/libero, and Gabriel and Tomi outside him as the more recognised defensive roles.

I don't get this fuss about Tomi actually being a CB played in RB. He's clearly a great RB so that's where he'll play.

He's not really clearly a great RB though. He's great because of his overall attributes, pace tenacity which you also need wide but he's not a great crosser and he doesn't have the movement of a natural RB either. Still by far our best RB and with the outlay we've made at centre back we won't see a real RB come in so let's hope he does a reverse Ramos in the future.

He was signed to play as right back. Arteta has spoken about him having the attributes he’s looking for.

Yes but hes not one by trade is the point. Arteta also spoke to Willian being instrumental to winning the CL by the end of the season, safe to say that's not happening either.

The reasoning seems to be that Tomiyasu makes sense at RB despite being a bit unorthodox because we'll deploy Tierney on the left.

It's Tetris selection but if Tierney strikes good form and White grows a bit further in confidence and consistency, the balance of a Tierney - Gabriel - White - Tomiyasu back four seems better than we've had for some time.

Tomi with his blend of defensive attributes, mobility and ball-playing attributes will be useful in other formations too, as will White (maybe). Overall we've spent a big packet and we now have a setup in defence that might get us to a good place.

Yeah it seems like Arteta is doing this lopsided thing where Tierney is high up on the left playing as winger especially, Tomi-White-Gabriel forming a three, and Saka on the right wing. ESR and Ode in front of Partey and behind Auba. I think it's a little more fluid in the attacking end but that seems to be the pattern he's going for

Tomiyasu has the speed and engine to get on the overlap all game. I haven't seen any outstanding crosses yet, but he clearly has very good technique and composure in his passing, so I don't doubt he'll be a big threat when we face teams that we can dominate against. Much like Ivanovich used to be for Chelsea - solid in the big games but a legitimate threat in the other 25 games of the season simply because he could hit a ball well and get up and down.

There are going to be games where we need Tomi to get forward a lot more but I don't see any reason to assume he's not capable of it. Looked good enough against Burnley in that aspect of his game and as noted before he's 22 and just arrived in a new league. He's 2 footed too which is a massive bonus.
