Not sure any of these line-ups would actually work. Looks like there's decent amount of quality, but we have to factor in Arteta and the fact that Auba is no longer what he used to be.

Actually, after considering Arteta and injuries, we'd probably end up looking like this:

Arteta would also somehow find a way to start Willian over Saka or Maddison for the first 3-4 months.

Nah Maddison is a out and out number 10. Will have 2 CMs behind him.

Our striking options is still piss poor. Auba has been poor for a year now, Laca is terrible. Even if we splash 70m on Maddison it won't be good enough to propel us close to 4th IMO.

Need another big striking or CM signing. Our RBs are very average too.

The formation paves the way for the likes of Willock and Azeez to contribute too. It would require us to play a much higher line though and press much more aggressively.

we can play that midfield against the bottom 6 at home, but that's about it imo. maddison said he worked with coaches to adjust his style last season to play as a lampard-style number 8 making runs into the box

Laca has better goals per minute than Lautato in a much harder league and that's with no knees. He takes 50 % longer per goal than 60 year old zlatan this season. He seems really overpriced. Although he is young and theirs always room to improve.

He's much better than Laca speedy. He's better technically, he can run, he provides more assists and he scores more goals. And that's despite the fact he's not Inter's main goalscorer. At 23 he's already a better player than Lacazette has ever been. Huge leadership qualities and graft on him too.

My concern is that I think he works better in a partnership, and we barely play with one striker nowadays.

I'm not sure. I think maybe the best way to use him would be in a 3-5-2 or a 4-4-2, but you don't really see teams play that way in England.

I think that Martinelli-Auba and Nketiah-Auba have shown glimpses of being promising stiking partnerships for us, and both Marty and Eddie have that same graft to them as Martinez. Maybe you could stick him out wide but he's not really someone who'll hug the touchline. We always had a bit of a headache trying to fit Alexis Sanchez into the team, even when he was really good, and I think there's a chance Martinez will be the same. That's what I meant in the other thread when I said you have to find a role for him.

Yeah I don't know how you'd fit him in really other than give an Alexis like role. We don't have the goals from wide to play him the way Liverpool use their CFs for instance.

Lautaro reminds me of a young Aguero. I think he will play the lone striker fine if the 2 wingers have fine off the ball movement too, because Lautaro holds up play pretty well and does a fair amount of assists. He can also play false 9 much better than Laca who normally is just a false striker. He is waiting to explode with goals.

If we bring in Maddison, I'd love to see us try a 4-2-2-2 with Auba-Pepe as first choice striking combo backed up by Balo - Eddie / Marty. The creative roles in the 2 behind the front 2 can be Saka, ESR, [Maddison] and Nelson. I think most of our strikers are better off playing in a two, this system plays Pepe where he is strongest (playing off a striker) and lets the creative players drift laterally. The big weaknesses with this structure of course are the distance between the lines, especially when the AMs drift wide, but I think it suits us better than 4-2-3-1. While our players have the fluidity to interchange (and maybe we could have seen that under a more enterprising manager like early Wenger), modern day coaches who are so focused on systems won't allow this to happen.

I have always liked Maddison. However, knowing our luck, a deal like this will possibly see Willock go to Leicester to become a top player while Maddison spends most of his time here on the injury table. I agree, just put up the cash.

If Nelson and Maitland-Niles take £40m off the total then I'd do it. I'd rather sell Nelson with a decently-priced buy-back clause though. Willock should not be going there, no way.
