Agreed, he doesn't seem the smartest, but that would be why a manager should take the lead and shape his career, knowing his deficiencies. If Arteta can only work with certain types of players, then he's a bit useless.

Wenger, Emery, Hoffenheim manager, Freddie and now arteta all failed. Theirs no need to twist everything into an arteta dig. He's doing stuff you see phased out at U14s, you can't really he hasn't been told this stuff a millions times. And chose not to listen, panics and does it anyway, or is too thick to comprehend why he shouldn't be doing it.

I think our fanbase overrates Nelson a tad too much based on a off-hand comment made when he was 15-16 (better than Sancho etc.)

He's been dreadful for the first team, and it's nothing to do with Arteta because it spans 3 other coaches. He was a real star for England youth sides, and basically took apart whoever he played against at youth level for Arsenal, but the only time he has looked like he could replicate that at senior level has been a couple of pre-season friendlies and Carabao Cup games where he played right wingback for Wenger.

A couple of years back, Dula used to say we should try him at right back, and I have wanted to see it myself for a while now. He no doubt has no interest because he sees himself as a genius attacking midfielder, but that aside, I think it could work. I don't see it coming together for him as an attacker at a club like Arsenal - Saka, Smith Rowe, Pépé are far too good for him to compete with any time soon.

He was with Wenger before he turned 18, for Hoffenheim he's on loan they have no long term motive, Emery convinced him to go to another country on loan, Freddie was here for like a month to compare that with Arteta who's supposed to be running a long term project with the youth is disingenuous to say the least.

Arteta seems hopeless.

i dont think nelson is going to be another gnabry. maybe he will, but i doubt it.

we are absolutely awful at selling players in the market, so maybe we're better off trying to use them as makeweights in a deal for better players

I think that's really unfair, his ability in the youth teams was obvious. He had a really promising pre-season and then tore it up in the U23 side, winning PL2 player of the season. Had a relatively successful loan spell in the Bundesliga too, scored like 7 goals didn't he?

I won't comment on his mentality as that will be speculation. But I do think he's struggled with the physicality of senior football, you can see he hasn't been able to adjust his game to compensate for the fact that he can't breeze past players. When he played for the U23s again recently you could tell he lacks the intelligence and nuance in his game, he just reverted back to bullying these kids and running pass them for fun.

Letting Nelson go is fine, we've handled him badly the last couple of years, it is what it is.

not every young arsenal winger is the next gnabry. serge actually showed immense quality in the first team against premier league opposition before being derailed. nelson has NEVER showed any bit of quality while with the first team so if these past few years have been a bad patch, where was the good one?

him and maitland should have tried being permanent fullbacks.

Nelson has looked awful pretty much every time I've seen him play. He's "flashy", but very ineffective. Looks like he doesn't really understand how to beat proper defenders.

Grealish and Maddison were in the championship barely scoring goals at 20 and are now going for 70m+ because of decent seasons and media hype. Nelson could easily fall into that bracket if given games and developed, something clubs like Leicester are particularly good at. We should send him on loan and see how his value sky rockets, as it has done for Willock and then sell. Something Liverpool and Chelsea excel at.

Not use him as a cheap make weight to get Maddison, who we can't afford outright, because we spent majority of our budget on Ben White, despite being stacked at CB.

bell update. not saying much new, other than maddison is plan A, but we'll switch to odegaard if the price is too high. also mentions Norwich have a sell on clause of 10-15% which is a stumbling block in any negotiations

Just looking at the sheer outlay you feel the plan A was always White this summer, not White and Maddison. It's probably why we were lowballing Norwich for Buendia too; if we could have had him cheap we would have done it, but once the fee sailed past £25-30 million we were never really interested and we couldn't guarantee him a clear role on a personal level either because he was not a big priority.

Either way I don't think Maddison is worth emptying the coffins over when we have Smith-Rowe. Have a lot of time for him as a player otherwise, for my money he's a better attacking midfielder than Grealish, but we have to be smarter with our money.

I don't get the feeling money is a huge factor this summer. That's not to say we can go out and spend £400m, but just reading between the lines it doesn't feel like Arteta and Edu are working with constraints. Our spending is already at £80m and the vibes you get from the usual sources (Wheatly, Whatt, Orny etc.) suggest that we're nowhere near finished.

That being said whether we can afford it or not, £70m+ on Maddison does feel overly indulgent, which is why I can't see it happening.

It just makes no sense to me I guess, with four years in Europa League followed by now being out of Europe altogether. Even if Kroenke were footing the bill we have a limited amount of freedom considering our economic results and the size of the wage bill already.

My suspicion is that we will sell players to make up for most of the outlays, which makes me a bit mad, because I'm pretty sure Willock will be one of them.

pepe and partey were surprises, economically speaking. maddison might be another that falls into that category, but even with that said 65-70m really feels like a stretch
