Seems as though Conte really might just be a cheque book manager
Nah he is a top manager. He did well with an average Italy side at Euro 2016 and also turned around Juve’s fortunes and made them into a machine. Winning the league in his first season at Chelsea was commendable too. Turned around Inter too.
It’s just that he’s arrived at a club in Spurs which is on the decline and have the worst DNA/mentally any ‘top’ club has in Europe. Even Pep would struggle with Spurs.
I put zero stock in interntaional football. Gareth Southgate also did well with Declan rRce and Kalvin Phillips playing CM with England, and I would be genuinely shocked if he could lead Man City into the top 4.
That said, Conte has what I'm claiming Brendan Rodgers lacks: He knows exactly the shape, style and individual characteristics of the team he wants to build. And of course he needs lots of money to build it, who doesn't? Quality players are necessary to any good team. No coach, anywhere, builds a top team without top players. I think behind every very good team is a story of great recruitment - whether expensively assembled or not - it's about knowing the qualities needed to build a high functioining team, and I think you need a great manager to do that, not just a great DoF/recruitment team.
