Clubs like Leipzig and Hoffenheim bought players for comparatively big money when they were still in the second tier. A club like Newcastle which can offer EPL exposure will have no problems getting players for big money, even if they do get relegated their new signings can jump ship to a different English club who'd pay their wages.

They will buy some Spanish players that Emery is familiar with and underrated for good price.

Then pay high wages for some past it used to be good players like Ramsey etc.

Out of interest does anyone still think we've been robbed for Willock? I know a Newcastle fan who reckons they've been fleeced.

Don’t think the price is robbery, it's more that if money isn't the reason we don’t have another midfielder then that also means we didn't need to sell Willock to get funds. Id rather have him here than not. Same with Douzi, although there we definitely got robbed.

Agree price for Guendouzi was disappointing but also not convinced we'll end up regretting his sale.

I remember a few on here thinking we should have gotten much more, which I never really deemed realistic. Whether or not we should have kept him is another matter, I was in two minds myself but I'd argue selling early while stock is high is one thing we've not done enough.

In ideal circumstances we should have got something similar for Douzi, but we backed ourselves into a corner on that one.

Yup. Even lesser players with less experience fetched more. We definitely sold below market rate considering how high his stock was, even though I wanted us to cash in while its hot.

Whether those other clubs are accounting exercise though we will never know.

To be fair, most of Chelsea products are proving their worth this season.

Liveramento, Broja, Gallagher and Guehi are pretty much undroppable at this moment.

IMO part of our problem is timing regards to when we look to sell. LFC have sold well before the market 'peaks' and then goes into decline, whereas we seem to end up trying to sell on the downslide. More recently LFC seemed to sell just before the COVID lockdowns and as a result were able to still obtain pre-COVID market value, whereas during COVID we have struggled to sell for cash, let alone value.

We're watching two similarly sized English clubs consistently extract high fees for average English talents. Why is it an odd measure to compare ourselves to them?

We're talking about the sale of Willock here, I don't think it's possible to sell a player on a peak higher than his at the end of last season.

The rest of your post is not true either. Liverpool have sold post covid some dodgy Welsh winger to the Championship for 15m, a semi retired fully shit Lovren to Russia for 12m. Chelsea sold Morata for 55m, Pasalic who's decent but never in their picture for 15m, Abraham for 40m, Zouma for 35m. Meanwhile we had to give away Mkhitaryan Sokratis and Willian for free, will get 10m for Guendouzi and I have a strong suspicion Saliba will join this list soon enough.

Whoscored has him at a rating thats around the same as Ode and Lokonga for the season, not the most scientific system in the world but given I haven't watched a lot of newcastle its what I have to go. I wouldn't write off either of them as us having been fleeced.

I still think it was a mistake selling Willock, we had the option to loan him again and that would have made much more sense IMO. I think Edu just wanted a sale because he had no other sales for the summer.

Looks like Emery has turned down Newcastle and continue at Villarreal.
