You just have to watch him play, he's pretty magnificent on the ball. Very smooth, great control, strides out of defense with purpose. This is the type of signing you make when care more about what your CBs can do in possession. His defending isn't bad, but we aren't trying to sign him for his defending so much.
Haven't really noticed him before, but he looks terrific on the ball in compilations. Having a cb who can pass or run with the ball past the lines is a huge advantage.

At this stage, the best thing you can do to understand a defender is to just watch him. You can pretty much know what a midfielder looks like just by looking at his numbers. Same isn’t true of defenders.

IMO the data used for the analysis is flawed in that it treats all defenders as much the same in terms of where they play on the pitch, as if they were all tasked with the same role and position in the same defensive line. Going by the numbers White is much the same level as Holding both as a defender and perhaps more importantly as a ball playing & progressive CB. What it doesn't tell us is the suitability to play in a high defensive line and any recoveries, although his dribbled past numbers are not good. As a combo it makes me question his price as there doesn't appear to be anything he stands out in.

From the data his numbers in possession aren't outstanding in terms of what he does with the ball in terms of his carries or passing, much as his defensive numbers aren't anything outstanding either. He will not improve us in terms of Defence and he is not going to replace Luiz on the ball.
That said what it doesn't tell us is the tempo at which he does his work and how press resistant he is.

He'd be better than Luiz ever was for us, on the ball and off it. I feel pretty confident of that.
Reminds of the Leeds version of Rio Ferdinand.

His passing and progression numbers are below Luiz, but his tempo could be the major improvement.

IIRC Ferdinand was a more accomplished defender in terms of both tackling and winning the ball in the air.
I haven't watched White so I'm just trying to grasp what it is that makes him worth 50m, let alone as CB.

Telling ya, hop on those yt comps. You'll see why.
Ferdinand was a colossus.
Hard to see him be that good.
Unsure how quick White is, but he reminds me a little bit of Hummels in compilations. Good timing, superb on the ball, and a touch of arrogance.
He has the potential though, I see a young Rio Ferdinand in him too. I think Ben White only weakness is probably in the air.
Still, we are paying 50m for a lot of potential, he only have a season in championship and PL.
He is small for a CB, how is he in the air?
He’s relatively slight. Quite tall though
Almost as tall as Gallas I believe. Not tall at all, but no idea how he is in the air.
Arteta clearly wants us to dominate possession and be press resistant.
In that sense signing White is a must
Can see us signing White then Rob Holding rocking up on the first day of pre season sporting a luscious thick head of hair akin to Homer J in his youth and everyone going “ooooh who’s that guy”
“That’s Bobby H”
And he’s wearing a t shirt with “sorry I didn’t cost £50m” on it
I love how front footed and snappy he is. Really enables his team to win the ball high up.
Ben White said his goodbyes to his teammates and told them he will be joining Arsenal reports Mirror

He'd be the least effective in the air of any of our current options going by the numbers. That said I don't think it would be his role to be a standard CB, and some of the best defenders in the game have been short - Puyol and Cannavaro were both shorter than White.
