Barzagli was the better pure defender out of the Juve back three in my opinion.

Bonucci was the better passer, best ball playing defender of the decade, but always had a mistake in him.

The Wembley gates have been rushed. Anthems have been booed, stewards punched, murals defaced, racism paraded across social media. The lads are gacked up on Cake and Russel Dust outside Bella Pasta, flicking Vs in little Italy, abusing passers-by in the tube station.

A prime minister who has done more than any other person in Britain to enable division and stupidity, has sent a message condemning division and stupidity. A home secretary who employs cynical and divisive rhetoric is “disgusted” to find people have taken her seriously.

It was always a fundamentally misguided idea that Southgate’s fine young team might somehow “unite” a country that has profound structural and social divides. Football is just football. Winning matches is not a shortcut to education, decency and fit leadership elsewhere.

There is an obvious conclusion to be drawn from the wretched abuse of England’s black players. Clearly there is a group of people in this country that needs to be identified, censured and made, failing some divine conversion to the light, to shut the fuck up.

Southgate also spoke along the lines that most of the abuse was traced to sources outside the U.K.

Both are true. I'm not sure how it'll ever be policed, the only solution is for the FA, clubs and players themselves to get off the platform for a season and impact engagement figures. But that would hurt their sponsors and their own bottom line which is unfair so it's a horrible toxic marriage.

A quick scan of messages makes it pretty clear it's mostly from trolls, often overseas but certainly not always, who will have no connection to the club, country or player who probably get off on the attention it sparks.

There's just no way to stop it, they just need to get much, much better at deleting and policing content. Apparently instagram refused to censor both monkey images and the n-word directed at the likes of Rashford - despite them being reported - because the algorithm didn't deem it abuse.

I reported a guy on twitter once who basically followed up some abuse with a message to someone to say he's going to abuse them until he drives them into depression. I got a 'thanks for reporting' message and then tracked it every day for about 10 days to see what would happen - post was still up, account was still up. Checked again a few weeks down the line - no change.

If it aint copyright, they don't really care.

For safeguarding their own health players should stay away from social media, particularly the younger ones.

One of the first rules of being on the internet is to never feed the trolls. I remember that being a mantra on all forums a decade ago before Twitter and Facebook were even a thing and it, broadly speaking, worked.

Now the trolls get far more attention than they deserve and what's worse is that national newspapers actively turn to them for news since it beats them putting in effort. It's right that a light is cast on them but the proportion of attention is skewed in their favour.

Of course racism exists IRL too - Rashford's mural was defaced yesterday by some prick but today 100s of people have turned up to patch things up and put messages of support. However, if you browse Twitter the balance is skewed the other way around and often the more controversial the message, the higher it gets promoted.

I would have Shick instead of Lukaku, and Maehle instead of Spinazzola because he was more influential and played more minutes.

Special mention to Shaw, Schmeichel, Kjaer, Pogba, and Damsgaard.

Can't believe Southgate didn't play Grealish much.

Would have Mæhle in for Walker. Agree that it could be argued that Spinazzola should be the one to miss out, but he was just so good before the injury.

He had a great tournament. Only Verratti created more chances than him from open play, got three assists as well. Obviously Barella and Verratti are much better players but not much between their performances in this tournament.
