Having thought about this overnight, I’m actually starting to see why these clubs did it. If you look at the transfer window every single year, we wait for one of Barca, Real, Chelsea or PSG to spend £200m in order for the spending to start across all of Europe. These 12-15 teams are the engine that runs all of European football. And they understand their power. At the end of the day, even though I have access to multiple leagues like Serie A, La Liga, the Championship, etc., my viewing choices every weekend start with members of the Faithless 12. Not Norwich or Gladbach or Marseilles, great as all of those are.
So they’re flexing their power in line with global viewer appetites. And confirming our reality that Uefa has failed to redress for the past 20 years. Football ultimately is broken and unfair. Perhaps a Super League will give us some parity amongst elites.
My preference though, would’ve been for a clean break, not this double dipping where these clubs continue to use the rest of the pyramid to make money and then lock themselves into this prestigious Super League that further entrenches their advantage over the lesser clubs. That’s where the grotesque greed rears its head. They should be willing to take the risk and go it alone.
