He's obviously trying to kick start him into some sort of usable form, or maybe just trying to keep his spirits up. I don't really see the point though. Whatever you think of the Willian signing, 80% of the reasoning behind it would have been for his contribution this season, it's pretty much a write off for him at this point. Is there really any point in trying to work a player, who'll be 33 in August, back into form? What would you realistically get out of him if you did? A lot less than if you take Pepe, Martinelli or even Nelson to the next level.
Just write it off, tell the player you're sorry and move on. I'm sure even Willian will understand that it just hasn't worked for him here.
