Depends when the figures are from. If it’s since the start of last season up to now, then Ozil and Auba account for 700k on their own. Then you have Willian, Luiz, Mustafi, Kola, Chambers, Bellerin among others… sounds plausible to me.

The Özil part might actually be true since I remember we allegedly kept paying his salary for another six months after his move.

Still, no matter how many guys we moved on we also signed Partey Gabriel Odegaard, White, new contract for Saka and ESR etc just for the assumed big earners.

Also to be completely honest seeing how we're burning money everywhere there's little reason to assume that we've managed to haggle and convince the likes of Tomiyasu or Ramsdale to sign for peanuts.

On Twitter Arseblog was a little sceptical of that graph. Didn't elaborate though. These things are easy to manipulate. Does feel though that we've got a fair bit of room in the wage department now.

Well we need that room if we want to hang onto our young stars because over the next few years their wages are going to shoot up and if we don't pay them the big money some one else will.

Yeah, and we need the on-field progress and overall continuity to make those same players feel like they're part of a collective project and it's worth sticking round for, and to earn the money to pay them. All pretty tangled.

Thats got to be the plan. We need to start getting CL finishes or all the best young players will go. The club knows that though, its why they signed young players as there is a bit of insurance there that if they go you should be able to cash in and start again at least. We need to make sure we are consistent and sensible with how deal with players who wont sign deals though. Its very easy to set up a situation like this, our problem is generally have the balls to see it through and move on top players when it makes the most sense.

I saw a stat on Twitter (but haven't verified it yet) that we have 11 points more after 23 games than we did last season. That's pretty good going. If that rate continues, we could be on for a near 20-point improvement come the end of the season.

That's got to be considered good progress by anyone's standards.

That will be quite incredible especially considering how we started the season.

A 20 point improvement will see us end with 80 points, I don't think that it happening but a 75 point season itself will be great.

Next game against Wolves will be very crucial. They have quietly crept up again since we beat them.

They have Neto and Hwang back and finally scoring goals.

The first half of last season was terrible though. Easily the worst I've ever seen us.

Comparison like this is hard as well. Last season we could have been underachieving this season we are hitting where we should and with no European football I would expect an improvement as almost all the club's with big resources have gone onto have better seasons even out of Europe.

Top 4 should be the floor for this season with how things are. Then it'll be about seeing how we cope with the challenges of multiple games a week once again.

Top 4 would be a really good acheivment, looking at our squad compared to those around us, with the player turnover in the summer and age of the squad. That was the general consensus at the begining of the season. Guess its a reflection on how well the team and the manager have progressed, that now a lot considered it the bare minimum..

we have as good a chance as anyone else in the hunt. a key injury at striker or centre mid is probably our biggest weak point

Think you're confusing expectations and predictions here. Predictions are taking the manager into consideration, while expectations are what people think he should be able to do with what he's got (which is a combination of his players, time and money).

Yes you are. You aren't talking about your own views but the general consensus, and many here thought the squad was good enough for top 4 but didn't expect it because of the manager. Considering it "the bare minimum" now is also taking into account how our competition is bottling it.

I'm curious which of United, City, Chelsea and Liverpool people expected this squad to finish ahead of? I personally didn't rate United's business that much but plenty on here (and elsewhere) were talking about them being a title challengers after finishing second and adding Ronaldo, Sancho and Varane.
