If we hypothetically don't sign anyone, I can see two viable theories about it.

First, KSE is a bit over Arteta and Edu, and they've been told there's no more money till summer and they need to progress without it.

Second, they've decided we've got time and to keep calm, Arteta's got full backing for the medium term project, they go back to their supposed summer targets and condition themselves to finishing this season indifferently.

We're going to struggle with the players we have starting and our depth is non existent. If this results in Arteta shitting the bed and getting rid of him and Edu, then it is what it is. What a shambles. Worst transfer window ever

I guess there's a third theory, which is that some mixture of the first or second theories, and the club's sheer inability to bring home a deal has ruled the day.

It's probably a bit of everything. I don't think KSE have lost faith but they're never going to sign a blank checkbook either. It sounds like we were seriously in for Vlahovic and potentially Isak, so clearly some funds were made available, but most likely they're asking Edu and co. to spend responsibly. I wouldn't be surprised if part of the clear out is down to just that - we've probably saved near enough 34m of waste from the annual wage bill on players who've barely stepped foot on the pitch in recent weeks.

Mostly though I think it's about who your targets are and who's available in January, it's not always guaranteed to align even if you're willing to overspend.

Looks to me like we're trimming the squad and the wage bill to match a non-EL club. We know exactly where we're going and we're preparing accordingly.

So you're assuming that this isn't all just incompetence. I admire your faith in that they know what they're doing.

Oh it's still incompetence in charge. I just don't think they care much about it while the value of the club is still high. Kroenke missed our entire era of modern success and his stocks are still worth much, much more than he paid for them.

If they wanted to do this they should have done it in the summer. Not to sacrifice both FA cup and league cup and get us down to barebones without replacement when we needed a final push in the 2nd half of the season.

Absolute shambolic squad management. Basically keeping all the yes man whom some are less talented than the ones we let go for free.

We were in for Vlahovic by all accounts. This making examples out of players needs to stop. Arteta has no business managing a top club if his first and last resort is to banish difficult personalities. Even bloody Mourinho has fallen out with players publicly and still used them if it got him results.

I think the summer was just a bit of overspending to see if Arteta could get it done if he got what he asked for. Now we're balancing the books a bit to avoid having issues with the turnover ratio and other such regulations.

We have very knowingly lessened our probability of finishing in the CL places to please the manager's ego. I don't know which club operates in this manner.

no, its humiliating. we watch other clubs sell their nothing players for £10m+ and we let players leave on a free, after everyone on earth was saying we should have sold those players one or two windows ago and tried to recoup something.

its horrible asset management, and its nothing new here.

And if that was the game plan then we should have made sure we had a spine for the team as being fit for purpose, nit just the Defence and do nothing about the Midfield and Attack. Whilst I understand the frustration about this Jan window, if they knew the game plan in terms of budget then IMO the real damage was done last summer.

We would've been better off telling the squad on New Year's Day that there'd be no changes and they were on their own.
