Has Arteta Truly Turned it Around?

Sterling goal was in the first minute of the match. I believe that playing 110% focused from the first second is a task that the Manager should handle. And by the way, this is not the first time a goal so early in the match happens to us.

Everything about that goal was poor. Holding was backing off and ball watching, Tierney did not come close enough the Mahrez to block him from getting on his left leg. Even Leno didn't come off well. Dude retreated back to his line instead of coming out to catch that easy floated ball. Just poor from everyone.

I think it’s all on Holding personally. Hector had Bernardo behind him, Holding is touch tight to Sterling moments before he heads it in. Bizarrely he just doesn’t track the ball or make any attempt to head it.

Well it’s on Arteta to make such a player a consistent starter and even hand him a long-term contract extension.

We have a million gaps in the squad from atrocious recruiting over the past half decade. While it would be nice to get rid of all these players, I can get behind the Holding extension. He’s a good age, has played well, is stable and is English. He shouldn’t be a starter but hopefully Saliba or AN Other will solve that. But as our 3rd centreback, I’m not sure we can do much better

Yep. He was consistent earlier and has been poor lately. The extension protects his value too with the amount he has played this season and proven himself to be mostly reliable. We can get good money for him if we so wish.

The goal is on the defenders. What we did afterwards is on Arteta. He doesn't influence games. We have gone behind 13 times this season, and picked up 4 points.

Arteta rested some key players today, signalling that he places importance on the Benfica game. He really needs to coach this team to execute in that match and ensure we finish victorious.

I like the idea of having a rookie coach who can clean up the squad, because that is a miserable job for a proven manager like Ancelotti. But if he doesn’t make sufficient progress in getting the offense to click, we will need to think about his future. Nothing is guaranteed. Ideally he gets the job done, and results help a lot. Underlying metrics and progress help, but fans like victories.

Arteta has talent. He’s made changes and it’s not easy gutting the club of all the garbo players we had and still have. What he must do in the summer is go for it. No leaving us short in areas and have half a team like Wenger always seemed to have post Vieira

I think that there is a better path: Hiring Allegri, allowing him to clear the garbage, instill a different mentallity to the squad (and the Club) and competing seriously for top4.

Abysmal difference between what a top tier manager is able to achieve and what a rookie coach can do.

I don’t want to watch Allegri. I watched him win 5 scudettos with Juventus but he played some of the most boring, pragmatic football imaginable. He’s a big name, was taking English lessons 2 years ago: so checks boxes. But Wenger has left me demanding attacking football where we are the protagonists. I want someone from the Wenger/Cruyff/Guardiola school.

There aren’t any coaches out there worth going for. Just let Arteta carry on bringing in players like Partey

With jazz. One thing that is still lacking from the Guardiola teams as beautiful as they are is a sense of jazz. I think Wenger allowed his players to freestyle a little. That’s why we have so many memorable goals that aren’t just about the team executing a 200 pass move, but the artistic expression of men like Bergkamp and Henry.

But yeah, it does not necessarily have to be Allegri. I just wanted to show the difference between what we have and what we should have.

He also had far and away the best squad in Italy. So that context helps.

i really just cannot abide by the excuse that our squad just isnt good enough. there are 5-6 teams ahead of us in the table with inferior squads, with managers no one would want at arsenal, who are getting more from their squads than we are. we have could have an all world XI and finish 7th and the excuses would be that the team needs time to gel or there was fixture congestion or the pitch at the emirates was too slick or whatever.

arteta is underperforming. he should have gone to a smaller club to manage and work out the kinks and we could have pounced then. this club needs a serious manager who believes in attacking football and understands how to command a team. watching our squad, it doesnt look like they really take things seriously or play with a sense of urgency. you see it in the incredible lack of discipline/red cards, and in giving up a headed goal to a midget like sterling less than 2 minutes into a match that we should have absolutely been up for.

Unfortunately this takes more finances than we have available post-COVID (even before we talk about top4 quality), and nothing suggests that KSE are going to dip into their own pocket to take advantage of a buyer's market. Consequently we'll be lucky if we're balanced, let alone fit for purpose or even top4 quality.
