with xhaka staying I'm probably pivoting to maddison as the preferred AM tbh. xhaka and odegaard in the same midfield just errs towards a lack of dynamism/directness. if we signed a proper number 8 then odegaard would've been a great fit

I'm hoping for some kind of Lampard season at Chelsea. I was never one for this rebuild argument, absolutely no reason to plan for a midtable finish just because you have to start over look at Juve in 2011 rebuilt their squad and went from 7th to 1st in 9 months. But this season looks lost now with our midfield lacking Partey and Xhaka being a mainstay again. Hope Arteta leaves quickly enough for us to start grooming Lokonga and Willock in midfield, those two with Partey look like a great midfield in the making.

If Lampard season happen then it's another season wasted. If he is not up to it the earlier he goes the better, not January.

Come on man, that juve squad was littered with world class players. Theirs no comparison.

I didn't mean in terms of his quality, more like his first season where he was forced to introduce youngsters and get them to gel. We seem to be in a similar situation at the moment except it's self inflicted.

Really not bothered to argue if you think that Juve squad was world class. Easy on hindsight but they have no money to rebuild. Picked up Pirlo for free who Milan thought was past it, Lichsteiner and Vidal who was upcoming solid players but no way world class in 2011. Their other biggest outlay successfully was 10m for Quagliarella. Those were the only difference from the 2010 squad that finished 7th.

Conte was the main reason they went from 7th to 1st. He was very decisive in changing the parts of the squad he wanted to.

Clearly a WC squad is a massive stretch, absolutely shocking is also too much. It's a good squad with a great midfield and defence but a piss poor attack, Quagliarella went through his personal issues with his stalker, Matri is just shit and yet was their top scorer and Vucinic was extremely inconsistent. If it was a world class squad they wouldn't have bolstered it with Traoré that year and Bendtner the year after that.

None of this was the point anyway, I just gave an example that with a couple of smart additions, a reasonable talent level in the squad and a great manager you can go from 7th to 1st. Three of their four most expensive transfers that season were mostly flops, but guys like Pirlo and Vidal lifted the whole team, Marchisio went up a level or two under Conte plus he shored up the defence to become one of the best in Europe. I don't expect anyone to come in with a similar effect because I can't see who at Arsenal would recognise a coach like that, but someone who would give the youngsters a chance to gel because we're not going anywhere anyway would be nice.

Yup, they had all those world class players you mentioned minus Pirlo when they finished 7th the season before.

Ok so I'm not sure where all of this is going but if we have the lots of world class players in a weak league we can expect a quick turn around in form under a top manager.(juve has the second biggest wage bill at the time so the leauve win wasn't all that shocking).

Juve getting back to the top wasn't surprising, but the way they did it was incredible. Pirlo, Marchisio and Pogba cost them a total of £0. That's 3/4 of one of the best midfields in modern football. Vidal was the only one with a transfer fee attached and he cost something like £6 million. Barzagli was similarly voted the worst player in Bundesliga when they took him home and transformed him into an all-time Italian great. If the point was that you don't need to spend outrageous money to get results as long as you're competent at team building then you have to concede that Conte is the living proof.

An equivalent from an Arsenal point of view would have been to, for instance, bring back Bennacer when we had a clause, and to pick up Buendia in any of the last two summers. Imagine where we could have been if we had actually hired competent people.

In terms of the thread title = Xhaka says NO.

Further to this the failure to complete the purge AND fail to have a spine that is fit for purpose will probably put us back another 3-5 years of rebuilding before we can realistically consider being genuine competition for top4, assuming MU don't sort themselves out during that time.

I'd almost say the powers that be are just playing time ahead of another ESL push.
