Weird few days in the Saliba vs Arsenal saga.

First GFFN tweets that Arsenal propaganda, then he’s omitted from the Olympic squad, and now it’s announced he’s still part of our long term plans while going back out on loan.

Word is is that Saliba’s agent was at the mothership discussing his future the other day. I find it hard to believe that Saliba and his party would have agreed to him going back out on loan again if they had any major issues with the reasoning behind it. Surely we’d be looking to sell him if they threw a tantrum over it and made it clear they didn’t want to go out on another loan.

From the outside it just looks like we’re interested in giving a 20 year another full year of football instead of sitting him behind Holding and (hopefully) White and getting spot minutes here and there. Wouldn’t’ve minded him going out to a PL club, but struggling to see any downside to this, assuming Saliba isn’t overly upset about it.

Was reading he has rejected a loan offer from Rennes and the reports are they dicked him around last summer by pulling out of a loan deal for him to go there for the full season.

Except he's basically only had 2 half seasons with the 1st season cut short when Ligue 1 closed, and then he missed the first half of last season before the loan in Jan.
I'd be more concerned about him going on loan outside the EPL/Championship.

Yea, because you should force yourself to use a player just because somebody else bought him for a certain amount of money. What a nonsensical argument.

I just hope he's gone early and gone for the whole season. Would spare us the outrage before every match he didn't start.

I hope it's Arteta , don't see us going anywhere with him in charge. I doubt he will change his ways , we will probably see the same kind of football

We’ll be much better this coming season as we’ll have more players who fit Arteta’s style. We were a form team since the turn of the year too

if he really was part of our long-term plans we would try to extend his contract before sending him out for another loan. this feels like a shop wondow loan deal so we preserve his value instead him playing a bit part role heading into the penultimate year of his contract

and I thought arteta was going to cast his diamond eye over him during preseason to judge if he was going to be given a chance? seems like there was no real appetite for that from either party

A lot of people are setting themselves up to look silly. Getting upset over a tweet announcing a loan that literally ends with “still part of long term thinking”. I’ll be right there with you guys if we sell him for peanuts before he’s even played for us. But that hasn’t happened yet. So i’ll leave the tea leaves to you boys.

If Saliba was horrendously upset about going out on loan, then he wouldn’t be. He’d have handed in a transfer request and he’d be up for sale. It’s obvious we want money to refresh the squad, if we didn’t think Saliba was part of our future then we’d have flipped him for Ryan Bertrand or Fabian Delph already.

Luckily it’s only on loan which indicates that he hasn’t given up on playing for the club. Should come back to us fully ready when Arteta’s been replaced by a real manager next year.

journos were saying he'd be part of pre-season only a few weeks ago. don't take what they say at face value

Terry went on loan to Forest when he was 20. Rio went on loan to Bournemouth at the same age. So there's nothing crazy about him going on loan. And he's demonstrated his mental immaturity on social slagging the club with souzi. The other aspect is his football maturity.

he's gonna have a lot to learn. He had his mam's death, then a year of injuries then french championship loans that fell through so 4 months training then half a season of French football. That's not a lot of milage.

We offered him to championship clubs last season and he didn't go. I'm pretty sure we'd prefer a loan in England for his development or even transfer fee. If he's going back to France it's probably his preference.
