We cannot be elitist about where good players come from. Maddison was, like Buendia, Championship player of the year. Leicester signed him for £20m and will probably get a 2,5x return if they sell him to us this season.

I don't think Captains point is that we shouldn't be looking at Championship players, it's the suggestion that signing a Championship player who we were competing with Villa for would have been a 'statement' signing.

I only care about a process that signs the right players. Do we have clarity on our playing system and are we signing players who will complement each other. When we signed Pépé, we made a statement, but we bought a counter attacking player with no plan to counter at the time. I would rather the Championship player who fits in a coherent plan. Of course the best is a group of aligned superstars

As the one who made the comment about a statement signing in the first place, I thought I'd just point out that I did not say us signing Buendia would have made a statement.

I said in my follow up that Villa's actions IMO would be akin to us signing Havertz after CFC had made their bid, and then us making an offer to sign Mount = it's NOT about missing out on Buendia to AFC, it's about making a statement relative to the size and position of the club and our ambition or intent.
IMO Villa have and we haven't as yet, although spending 120m on White and Maddison would do so of a sorts.

Yeah Capi likes coming in out of the blue with some deranged stuff but I think you guys just misunderstood him here. He's saying the statements are nothing all that special and they aren't, Buendia is a good player but you think they just snapped up prime Iniesta by some of the reactions in the aftermath. I think it's mostly because of Hypeman Klaus, guy should really become an agent

Anyway, all I said was quite literally that not every Championship player is the same. Because of that I find it disingenious to say "you'd never be happy if Arsenal signed a Championship player" like it wouldnt matter whether we signed Buendia or Coventry's backup GK. It's outlandish to say that it wouldn't matter what Championship player we signed and it's outlandish to say that only a small portion of the Internet would be happy with signing Buendia (especially when that would apparently mean having 30-40m extra to put into a CM compared to if we're signing Maddison).
