You're dead right about saving face. That's the only reason they'll keep him now. Any club with ambition would have him gone by COB tomorrow. We waited weeks past the final straw with Emery and we're doing it again. Last December was really the time to sack Arteta but they gave him another chance. Now the inevitable has happened and we're here again and they still won't make the hard calls.
Change manager now and we can still get a proper EL place. Stick with Arteta and we won't, which of those is long term thinking?
the bewildering thing is, the club have invested a TON of money into the first team over the last 3-4 years, much of it spent by arteta, and theyve done this AFTER we dropped out of the CL. it would have been easy for them to just turtle up, sell off players, cut the wage bill drastically, and try to scrape back into the CL on a Europa League budget. instead, we've spent tons of money, given out HUGE contracts to flops like willian. so clearly they realize they need to spend to get back in. which means the only honest reading of this is that they just think arteta is a genius and they trust him, when all the evidence points in the opposite direction. they are deluded
