I think that should have been Ceballos. The problem was that he was too deep for most of the game since Xhaka can't receive under pressure to save his life. Hopefully over the next few weeks and months, he and Partey can rectify that situation and one of them can help make those transitions across midfield.

We need a better forward and I get the feeling Arteta plans to. He’s not keen on Lacazette or Nketiah hence playing Willian as a false 9

At least Eddie and Laca would have had more success closing down the opposition, feels like Willian hardly made any tackles or interceptions, feeling quite a worthless signing at the moment.

Striker (or LW depending on where we play Auba long term), RB, RWF, AM, CM, CB. These are still the positions that need upgrading on.

Why people are upset? We literally have seven teams in the league with better midfields than us.

It is also arguable that at least five of them have better full backs. Tierney being our saving grace.

We have a long way to go. We knew that. Next summer we need two midfielders, and that is only to bring us up to scratch with a starting three. Not strength in depth. Wingers, full backs, another cb, and depending on what happens another striker.

This is long term, and we competing better.

Agree, it’s starting to worry me a bit now. While the score line and lack of chances for city indicate a tight match we didn’t exactly look like we would score. 1-0 down surely last 20mins we have to try for it?

Our patterns of play seem so predictable as well. Almost like a rehearsed routine at times! Just far too much structure at times and not enough freedom for the players. I was hoping we played like this due to our shit squad but I think he prefers to have this controlled and structured approach. It’s a bit boring frankly and needs to change. Arteta’s first few games we played good football but since the restart has been very boring.

We need more players. No doubt about it. But this team should be capable of producing more goal chances right now. Bellerin and Tierney should be allowed to push much further up the pitch and provide width to our attack. We'd be more vulnerable to counter attacks, but I think Partey would be a much better counter defender than Xhaka.

Yes, Partey is key. We are also hamstrung on the right wing when not even Pepe really knows what he wants to do. So basically our only consistent outlet is Tierney, and we have Auba feeding on scraps that fall off the table.

Chelsea, Tottenham and Everton can be disputed.

I personally think we are hiding Bellerin at the moment. Defensively he is worst currently of any of the top team full backs. Obviously he has suffered due to injury, but he switches off far too much, and one on one he is weak.

Tierney looks fantastic, and if we had a right back like him, then we would be at the top of the list, up there with Liverpool full backs.

These fullbacks aren’t isolated players. Their chemistry with their wingers and combination with the midfield matters. Tierney does alright. Bellerin not so much.

I also think we shouldn’t fall into this mindset of oh why don’t we just play like Liverpool. It’s disingenuous. We are not Liverpool. We don’t have their strengths, and we have more weaknesses. So the balance is how do we play to our strengths while minimizing our weaknesses, hence Artetabol. It’s drab stuff attackingwise, but as with Emery before him I can see why we play or set up this way - it’s a choice born out of necessity.

Don't agree with that at all. Tierney and Bellerin is as good as whatever City and Leicester have.

Tierney is very good, but IMO Bellerin is our worst outfield player.

I think we were/are overly cautious and the strict adherence to playing the one way based around passing out from the back is no longer enough tactically as we are too predictable/one dimensional.
Leno needs to improve his distribution and to stop palming the ball into dangerous areas.
For all the progress we have made compared to the same time/fixture last season, it still appears we are scarred by the ghosts of recent seasons.
Arteta needs to start to up the ante in terms of our attacking play before we lose ground to clubs who are not afraid to 'go for it' and to play on the front foot. We need to exploit the potential of our attack, even if it means we change to a 4222/4231 rather than 433, or perhaps we need to play a narrow 433 rather than the 41221/wide 433.

Tierney got turned inside out about 5 times yesterday and it gets no mention, happens with Hector once and he’s shit. It’s really odd how people are almost waiting for him to screw up.
