That’s 2 CL’s to our none now for Chelsea. If only we showed the ambition they showed and got Tuchel when he was available.
Tuchel didn’t take over an average team. Yes they were under performing under a shit coach in Frank but that squad has full of serial winners and over £250m spent on it in the previous summer.
Other than Thiago Silva, Azpilicueta and Kanté, who are the “serial winners” at Chelsea?
Didn’t we have some of those too? Luiz? Willian? Aubameyang won a few in his career. Partey won some at Atletico. Cedric is a European Cup winner.
They spent £250m last summer because they were banned from transfers the previous summer, in which we bought Pépé (£72m), Tierney (£25m), Martinelli (£6m), Luiz (£7m) and Saliba (£27m). We added to that last summer with Partey (£45m) and Gabriel (£23m). That’s £205m we spent over the last 2 summer windows. This myth about us not spending needs to be put to bed.
Chelsea are successful because first and foremost they are owned by an ambitious bloke who demands to be the best, have a winning culture and are ran like a big, competitive club is supposed to be run. That competitive edge they have will naturally mean that when their manager is performing poorly and a guy like Tuchel is available, they won’t sit around and hope Lampard will eventually come good. They will pounce on the opportunity to improve their situation.
If you told me in 2004 that Chelsea would go on to win 2 Champions Leagues in the next 20 years while we win none, I’d have laughed at you. Arsenal is a depressing topic for me these days.
