Yup, because Wenger and the idiots that ran Arsenal for the last 10 years created a squad and a club that was rotten from the top down. Tearing it up and starting again was always going to be painful. It's just a shame we're only managing a half arsed job of it right now, and will have to wait for new owners before we actually see things change fully. In my opinion, Arteta is the only good thing about Arsenal right now, ignoring the good players we have. He's the only one I think has a clue what he's doing, and much like Wenger he's being asked to do 10 different jobs because incompetence reigns all around.

He reminds me of when Roy Keane tried his hand at management, not that they are similar characters but Keane expected everyone on his team to play with the sort of drive and determination that he had. He couldn't figure out why players with more talent didn't have the same attitude that brought him to the top of the game. Arteta was a super pro as a player, no one talks bad of him that he played with, managers loved him, he was great for us and a defacto captain even when he didn't have the arm band. I think he expects everyone to be like him too and when they are not he can't deal with them, even if they are kids.

Only problem is the sort of footballer you are looking to appeal to Ricky, he doesn’t want to come slug it out with no mid table team does he? Especially one with a no reputation or track record having manager.

Great point Qwiss. I think that's nail on head. These guys often have very little patience for players who don't display the same ethic they themselves did in their playing days. With Keane it ended up getting him sacked as a player too long before he became a manager.

Of course, we've fallen a long way.

It stuns me that you guys, for the most part anyway, see this as a coaching problem. We are a club that is run in a way that almost defies belief. Arteta, as far as I can see, is managing to get us some good players in through the door, luckily he knows a good player when he sees one and has managed to sell the club to the likes of Ødegaard and White, and also get the really talented young players we have to sign new contracts, but I shudder to think who we'd be signing now if we had a coach with no vision and an ability to sell it - Unai Emery, for example. Imagine transfers were actually chosen by Emery, Edu and Josh!

Was going to say exactly this. You talk about the type of players we need to get out and he's made one of the worst characters a central part of his team. That totally contradicts any idea to me he's ruthlessly building a improved new team. Willian another, the evidence doesn't really support it.

Xhaka is no loser though. He might be a bit of a donkey of a footballer, but he is the biggest character in the squad by far. (I forgot about him in my post before!)

Wenger is part of the problem, but not the major reason now. It's unfair to blame it on him when we had tons of cash to splash on new signings and despite spending 300m have not improved the squad at all. When Wenger left we were creating goals for fun, tons of chances. In all attacking metrics now we are miles away despite having better players.

Wenger's refusal to spend when we had 300m sitting in the bank rotting was a big problem in the past, till we splash big time these few windows and cleared most of his buys now.

I've never seen the fabled character strengths that xhaka has. His actions at palace when the team and he were performing poorly as the captain to throw the armband down and is not evidence of an individual with character. Though most of his appearance his idea of helping the team is unnecessary fouls and bookings because he thinks it shows great response but actually just hurts the team.

He's the best example of the mid table average player who has played their part in Arsenal terminal decline and so if he isn't one of the main guys getting moved on I have little faith that Arteta or the others have an understanding of what's wrong at the club

I agree he's a poor footballer, prone to utter stupidity, only with a great left peg. I don't know what the club were thinking when they decided to pay £35m for him... All that said, the guy works his arse off, turns up every week, doesn't sit out when he's a bit ill or nursing an injury, he tackles hard, he tries to motivate and organise the other players, and he never hides.

It's ironic that I'm defending him because I can't stand watching his dumb passing, terrible first touch, and complete lack of awareness in the middle of the pitch. I wanted him sold badly this summer, BUT he's the only leader this squad has and that is a fact. The rest of them, Tierney aside and he's not quite there yet, are eithter too young or just wasters that collect their wage but don't give a shit.

How is Xhaka a big character? When have you ever seen the team underperform and Xhaka dragging them through it? I've seen Auba do it, I've seen Saka and Smith-Rowe do it, I seen Ramsey do it, I've even seen Laca do it. I've never seen Xhaka do it.

You want to talk about players playing for the badge etc but here's a guy who stormed off in a huff and threw the arm band on the ground. Who only a few weeks ago was slating the rest of the squad for our failures and praising Mourinho.

If everything else is going well Xhaka can do alright. He's got some ability but he has fuck all character and when he's not on it he's one of the biggest liabilities in the team. And he goes through spells where he's not on it every single season.

Then hire Arteta as an ambassador or even technical director. Emery after he left went to a club with fewer resources and a much inferior squad to ours, kicked us out of the EL won a European trophy and got Villarreal into the CL in his first try there and for their first time in a decade. As a coach Arteta is about four or five levels below Emery, even the good ebening version that became a joke because he didn't want to use a translator.

Yes, at present he is, let alone shifting his inadequacies on the shoulders of Wenger who left 3 years back. Arteta and Wenger don't belong in the same sentence in this context. What club needs to cull every player for a new mamager to become accountable. This is madness.

I still shudder at the thought of that dude linking with Edu and Josh to oversee our transfer window. Boy, oh boy. I think it's a shame we wasted 18 months with him at the helm, happy to not rock the boat too much and work with what he had. If we had appointed Arteta then we would be that much further into rooting out the shitsters and might have actually been able to sell most of them pre-pandemic. C'est la vie.

I think the approach is fine in theory, we've seen other coaches put it to use with the desired effect. Even Arteta did initially, it just didn't last beyond the first hurdle.

Every club is loaded with players considered shitsters by a large number of their fans. For me it seems you absolve Arteta of every responsibility to get decent football out of them which is a core task of every coach in the world. You can't just work with great players, you have flawed youngsters like Guendouzi or AMN who looked like he'd make the RB/RWB position his early on, you have veterans like Mari Leno or even Kolasinac who have put in much better performances early on than they do now, yet you're seemingly fixated of cleansing the squad of every single player who's not exactly tailor made to the gaffer's preferences.

I think you'll find by the time Arteta manages to cull everyone he doesn't want some of the guys who looked great early on will have turned to duds themselves, it's what happens when you don't know how to coach attacking patterns and stifle creativity. How long until Martinelli becomes one of those youngsters who simply didn't want it enough?
