I don't see it. Why would we buy an experienced international (even if it is Iceland) to be third choice when we can just promote a youngster for cheaper? Seems excessive for a third choice.
Likewise, why would we spend the majority of Emi's fee on a second choice when we need to be accruing funds to make purchases elsewhere?
Because he's probably much better than the academy keepers and costs peanuts. Again, it's a million and a half according to rumours. Who cares?
Because we absolutely need a good 2nd choice keeper. From a personal point of view I'd rather we didn't blow the money on a short arse because that is bound to end in tears in Premier League, but how can anyone argue that we don't need to invest in a new backup goalkeeper, especially after last season when Martinez was so key to our FA Cup win?
Could also be that Claude is right and we really rate Raya, and Runarsson is a cheap one-year stop gap before he arrives who'll then drop to third choice. Who knows. We sold Martinez because he demanded to be let go though, not because we wanted to free up funds for other transfers; most of that money'll have to come from elsewhere.
Yeah, I'm with Goon on this. Not disputing the need to replace, just don't think it's worth spending money on this summer.
And whilst I know Martinez asked to leave, it doesn't detract from the fact that we've struggled to generate funds in this window, so should really invest what we get where we need it most.
I think the biggest lesson from Martinez is what a waste it is to stockpile young 'keepers and not give them a proper chance. We may have a gem on our hands and it's not a massive risk to integrate them into the first team setup by making the third choice.
