He’s still our best centre back defensively, and we have one of our best defensive forms in years. His egghead moments stand out because they’re memorable, but less memorable is the game winning shift he’s putting in for 89 minutes a game every time out. His combination of athleticism, physicality and aggression is hard to replicate.

The new Koscielny, and I say that with respect, while also remembering both having a knack for mistakes.

But for those other 89 minutes they’re both top top defenders.

And to be fair Koscielny’s calamity reputation was formed in his first half dozen games. Very reliable after that. He looked chaotic when he first arrived. But that’s defense. You are busy cleaning up after everyone. It gets better the lord settled you and the the rest of the team are

he's had calamity moments throughout his Arsenal career.

I think the comparisons are apt, both warriors who play their heart out. Both score clutch goals.

Gabriel is a lot more fiery though.

I don't think Kos is as error prone as it is made out here. Probably for him is his errors are always high profile so people remember it. Otherwise he is mostly solid and often unbeatable 1v1.

A lot of Kos "mistakes" were because he was the last man while others shirked their responsibility.

Koscielny was unbelievably good. One of the fastest CBs I've seen as well.

His reputation has take a knock due to how it ended but he was probably the best Arsenal defender along with Sol I have seen at his very very peak. Unbelievably good.

Not being a member of a title winning side also tends to colour how he and others like him are remembered. There's always a tendency to overrate some members of our title winning teams

Difficult to compare eras but Kościelny was able to keep players like Suarez and Messi quiet at their peak. If whoever we give the job on Haaland can silence him, that'll be reason to talk.

I have strong memories of Messi absolutely murdering us with Kos in the side. Kos was good but I don't think he was really up there with the likes of Campbell, Adams, etc

Gabriel hasn't had enough time here to compare him to Kos really. We'll have to see how the next couple of seasons play out before making a real comparison.

The age Gabby is now is just getting up to the age Kos was when he joined us after his unorthodox Ligue 2 apprenticeship, etc …
