I think it has little to do with "skill". They are leeches who use small clubs as vehicles to exploit actual football people to become obscenely rich two-bit celebrities. There's a scummy, casting-couch vibe to all these dudebros.

Reminds me of us taking Sven Mislintat. I think hiring Sven and Raul at the same time was potentially an identity crisis. We’re we trying to unearth gems like Leicester or just go negotiate with the biggest agents like United? These are two very different clubs with very different operations on a day to day basis. Hopefully, we are clarifying our identity now

That's a really good point about our identity crisis post Wenger.

I would like to think we knew what we were doing, that we wanted the best of both worlds which I think is needed to be successful, but those two just couldn't coexist as personalities.

That's just being hopeful about those that run this club though.

For all the obsession with directors of football in the modern game I genuinely struggle to think of more than two or three who have done an irreplacable job. There seems to be much fewer great ones around than there are great managers, which probably also means that it's a much worse idea to build a club around them. There's no guarantee that a DOF will last longer and he's much less likely to be competent at his job.

Actually I'd say the successful DoFs have been much more stable at a club than managers. Having said that, I agree it's a bad idea to measure DoFs on the same scale as managers. If we want a DoF to encourage long-term thinking and so on, their measurements and incentives have to be aligned to those ideals. I genuinely think that there aren't more successful DoFs because club owners don't know what they want from a DoF and try and measure their success on the same timelines as they do with managers.

I finally understand Wenger's disdain. They remind of people with positions like "Lead Salesman" in that they take credit and avoid blame. Quintessential middle management.

I can see why Wenger wouldn't like them but no idea why the concept would seem so foreign to the English. The manager is the most important man at the club. The DoF is the one he reports to, and the one who basically decides every relevant position in the club's backroom staff. No idea how he's positioned to avoid any blame, other than the board or owner who appoint him he's literally the man in the club, it's why in continental Europe he's actually called the manager while the head coach is called Trainer.
