Exactly. He's done it time and time again, what's the point of being mad at him when he doesn't field himself?

Might as well be mad at White for not being a great goalscorer or at Lacazette for being poor in the air, it's just physically not possible for Xhaka to not fuck up.

That's a trifecta of mismatched signings, well below the level we needed, that we had to spend years and hundreds of millions trying to correct.

Yeah, I'm not gonna blame Emery or Wenger for Xhaka being a moron in 2022. You get signings wrong, it happens. You just need to accept it and move on quickly enough, and boy oh boy do we ever suck at that. Arteta had the chance to end Xhaka's tenure at Arsenal once and for all, but he didn't and the he's to blame for that, as well as the general fucking about with the midfield position.

Think in this case, assigning blame to anyone but Xhaka is a bit redundant though, he had to play against Liverpool, no one would have left him out of the team prior to the game, and it was he alone that fucked it up.

Me thinks it started well before that - season 15/16 was where we lost focus of the impact of the mega TV revenues. Not only did we fail to sign players but we also failed to rectify that issue the following season.
I'd also consider Giroud to have been a bigger issue at CF than Laca, because of the impact he had on our playing style.

so what was his excuse for keeping him (them)? bad signings will happen, our problem is not getting rid of them after seeing them while they still had value.

I suspect that neither the club nor AW adjusted well to the new TV riches, in that I don't think either of our scouting or transfer strategies initially changed in terms of targets until Gazidis rang the changes. Then when we tried to play catch-up we over spent poorly on names, experience and flavour of the moment without having an actual team building plan in place.

One thing that hasn't changed, and IMO this comes from the BoD and our financial structures rather than the football operations, is our reluctance to turn players over quickly if they are shown to be not fit for purpose. I suspect we do not have the cash flow to enable us to replace players easily/quickly, and because we pay most of the fees in structured deals we possibly need to retain them for a period before the amortisation of their value v fee paid allows us to do so without suffering a loss.

What's wrong with blaming the manager for not only declining Romas offer but extending his contract last summer? He wouldn't have been around to fuck up in the first place.

Hmm I mean we're spending piles of cash and KSE appears to be going along with Arteta exiling valuable players ... main issue as we're discussing is that he's exiling some of the wrong ones, and not getting rid of all the right ones.

We all knew last summer that extending Xhaka was a poor decision, so that one's pretty unforgivable.

I said it's a bit redundant to blame anyone but Xhaka for Xhaka being an idiot, he was genuinely the best player available on the day, and while that fact is on Arteta, Xhaka losing his head isn't, that's on the man himself. Some here mentioned AW and Emery as well, for buying him and sticking with him. And I just think that's being easy on Xhaka, like he can't be expected to not lunge in and miss the ball by a mile.
