Tbf our good form in recent months has been with Xhaka and Partey in midfield. We need to replace him though, with someone like for like, but without the deficiencies.

IMO the question is why did we either not change the role or replace/improve on him for 5+ seasons as whilst being the only one able to play the role make well make you an automatic starter/important, it still does not make you good enough or irreplaceable. I understand that it may put you down the order in terms of priority upgrades, but 5 years?

I can go with that (and apologies to flobaba if I did get the wrong end of the stick), however I also think that Xhaka's limitations have played a part in shaping the role into what it is and how it is perceived to be. As such we shouldn't be looking for a replacement for Xhaka, as opposed to being someone who provides the missing elements to balance the midfield. Further to that we should not be looking at a player for a twin pivot if we still intend to ultimately change to a 433.

Honestly though, signing Xhaka is the single most annoying thing Arsenal have done in my lifetime. Would never have thought I could dislike an Arsenal player that much.

If we can't sell him just deregister him so he's not taking up a squad place.
Let him go for free = I don't care about any transfer fee, just make him go away.
That said part of me wants to see him be made to sit with the subs for the remainder of the season, so he still has to turn up for games and yet never play.

we had a bunch of other more opportune moments to sell him if that's what we wanted, and tidy sums were on offer at the time as well. to let him go now is just random and sloppy

Curious about the eventual documentary on this season and whether it captures how the team reacts to all the shit he pulls. I'd have him cleaning toilets, boots, kits and sleeping in a kennel.
