Elneny.

I don't think there's a ton of difference to be honest, but I think Elneny is more suitable because he's got more energy and mobility, and he's capable of doing the things Xhaka does well. Xhaka often drops down as an auxiliary fullback when the game turns and you're not going to get that from Ceballos, nor Torreira and Guendouzi when they were here. Elneny is also a little younger than Xhaka. And Gilberto really likes him, and who am I to argue with the master of defensive midfielders.

I'd want a mobile midfielder who can cover ground and is a little more withdrawn / defensive than Partey. Effectively Elneny with a little more bite. It's in this context that I proposed Mady Camara's name in another thread. I think he will release Partey a little and allow him to play that transition role fully.

Camara - Partey - Smith-Rowe will be a midfield with a little of everything in it. Backup can be Elneny - Willock / new youngster - Brandt / someone else. Depending on Smith-Rowe's fitness, he can be the backup with another creative mid as well. If we can get Sabitzer (pipe dream I would think), he should be the first choice attacking mid and Smith-Rowe can be backup.

I'd be 'all in' for Sabitzer, but to partner Partey in a twin pivot as he does for RBL with Kampl.
I'd then move Ceballos to rotate with ESR as CAM.

TBH I don't think Xhaka has shown anything to suggest he has learnt anything from his red card and not making a public apology. His comments for me come across as unrepentant and arrogant / entitled. I admit it may be my bias and dislike for him as a player, but I got that vibe from his post match interview before reading any subsequent article.

How many times did Leno roll him the ball in midfield trying to start a counter, only for dear leader, at the slightest hint of pressure, to calmly stop, turn around, and pass the ball right back to Leno.

After a while Leno just started kicking it straight out of play, and I actually preferred that.

So done with this midfield.

Improved a little in the second half and he was combative, but you’re right, we will struggle until we sort centre of midfield. It’s not just that he passes it sideways and backwards, it’s how slowly he does it.
