If a typical 24m transfer for Torreira was paid in 3 equal payments of 8m Euros each; and their Partey transfer was still paid in one 50m Euro lump sum, it still wouldn't work out. We would end up with relative net cash flows of
Year one: - 42
Year two: + 8
Year three: + 8
This is the starting point of the negotiation.
Or they could pay a lump sum as well since we know they have money if we buy Partey. So everything in year one.
Actually, that's not the starting point. The starting point is if we went out into the market, what would we get elsewhere for Torreira. If we struck a deal with a 3rd party club, which 3rd party club would pay 24m Euro up front for him? None. They would typically have some deal with the cash paid out in a few years. That IS the starting point - the best alternative we have to negotiating with Atletico.
That is why the odds are so heavily stacked against us in this negotiation. And that is why you need to decouple the Torreira-Partey deals in your head.
