This isn't one of those deals I'd be pissed at Raul for. If he's not ready yet then he's not ready. We'll have to make do until then. Although it's taking longer than expected for one reason or another (for one thing I doubt he'd be any worse than some of the clowns we play every week and believe Arteta either is being overly protective or just doesn'trate the guy for some reason), getting him in was a great deal in ny opinion. The guy has all the tools to be a top, top CB and signing him when we could was definitely the right kind of risk to take. Just wish Arteta was braver and bedded him in this season. I think he'd have been able to do a job, certainly no worse Kola for example in a 3 man defence.

In any case, we've suffered Mustafi, Kola et al for so many years already, what's one more season, especially if it results in Saliba coming in next year ready to hit the ground running. In the meantime we'll have to make do with Gabriel, Luiz, Chambers, Holding and Mustafi. Hopefully Mari can come back and do a good job as well.

That's a reasonable approach for a club that's already in the CL but otherwise I think we've wasted £25m when we need immediate improvements.

Here’s the thing.
There’s always a push on this forum that we need to get to high quality young players first before the clubs like Dortmund, Lille and Lyon get their hands on them and sell them to us for £50m. Here’s the problem. When those clubs take on young players, they take an incredible amount of risk. It’s not a linear path. Some of those kids develop quickly, others slowly and others bomb out. This is the reality we have to face with a young signing like Saliba. This is a high beta project. We have to exercise patience. If he works out as analysts suggest he might, we have one of Europe's best defenders for the better part of a decade. That’s why we took the risk.

If it were me, i would’ve thrown the 27mill on top of the 72mill we paid for Pepe. We’d almost be able to say we have a 100 million pound signing. How great would that be?

It does explain why we went for gabriel so aggressively in a seemingly stacked area. Its just difficult to comprehend that he's so far off our other centre backs to the point he's not even considered an option for cups. He looked fine in the community shield, and i understand this is a reach, but he looked very comfortable in training videos. Anyway, it is what it is.

Do you guys remember Senderos and Djourou? Those were 2 of the highest rated young centrebacks in Europe. They came to Arsenal, had done early horror shows, and never recovered. We could always do the same go Gabriel and Saliba. Or we could integrate Saliba properly this year and then Saliba later when he’s ready.

Fighting the pessimism here chaps, but it feels like things are going the wrong direction

I'm not opposed to sending him on loan for a season, but wouldn't it make more sense to look for a good loan in England?

Maybe if we had a game against a lower league side he would have played. Maybe he'll play in the EL.

Seems like so many clubs are desperate to profit from this transfer window (including us) but are so risk averse that interlinked dependencies are becoming insurmountable. Who knows, maybe something gives today and tomorrow.

He didn't play in the community shield. That was the only time he made the bench. Other than the u23s the only time he played for us is our first pre-season friendly against some lower league team.

I called it immediately in the first match when Gabriel who hasn't played football for a good part of 7 months gets a start after just 1 training session while Saliba who has been here with us since July don't even make the bench when we are desperately short. Don't need to be a genius to figure out what happened and subsequent evidence proved it (playing for u23s, totally not making the bench etc).

I think he must be absolutely shocking in training, out of depth to not even be able to beat our dross of a CB that we have to loan him out again. And him needing another transition year doesn't make sense considering Gabriel played as little top flight football as him, and his similarly inexperienced partner in st etienne Fofana is getting sold for 40m euros. Weird case all round. Let's not forget when Gabriel first got linked 90% of the people here says he is shit in the compilation and people who watched Saliba a lot said he is much better and will be a starter immediately for us.

I don’t know if it has anything to do with training, Arteta was making these noises before he even got here.

Maybe Arteta just doesn’t fancy using a 19yr old centre back? Might be concerns about him adapting physically in the PL etc. Either way it’s clear he’s not going to be used much this year so a loan to a progressive CL club not a bad idea.

Yeah I'm misremembering the community shield, meant to say preseason friendly. Didn't look noticeably out of his depth. Maybe he's requested another season in france. Arseblog made a good point that gabriel himself was bouncing around on loan between troyes and zagreb at the same age. 19 is very young for a CB. I guess the price tag, a string of fairly strong clean sheet performances for ASSE before he got injured, and his physical stature made you hopeful he was ready to make an impact now. This feels like a bit of a come down, but being completely rational about it i guess a loan is ok. Wheel out 3ATB with mustafi and co in situ for the rest of the season

Reportedly Saiba’s mother died a few months ago, so he may be going back to France to be close to family / isn’t ready to adapt to a new country.

Don't really buy it, nothing to do with age. Think if you're good enough you're good enough under Arteta. I'm worried because you don't need to be special to beat the shocking CBs we have. The benchmark is set very low. And he has recovered from his injuries way before covid so in terms of rustiness Gabriel should be worse off.

Either way we can only loan him now but let's hope it's 25m well spent in the near future. Fofana at Leicester will be a very good indicator of how well we spent our money here.

This makes sense if true. Especially during Covid, with the restricted travel and everything, maybe he was the one to request a move back to France for another season for personal reasons.

Either way, Arteta does not seem to want to play him (either because of his lack of experience or because he just doesn't rate him), so a good loan would benefit everybody in the long term.

If he's having personal problems as reported, a loan back to France makes sense. I doubt he's a dud that arteta doesn't rate as is being suggested

I'm not shiting on him, I get it that he has potential and he will come good and when he gets at that lvl we have no chance to sign him so we have to move before he did. Let's say I'm ok with that type of deal but, from a business point of view...for a team that has no money, to buy a CB with 30 million that will not play for the club for 2 years, no matter how much potential he has...is it a good deal? Did he sign a 4 year deal? Next year he has 2 left, he is at the point of renew or sell if we trust what our board tells us, before kicking a ball for us. It's crazy. We have 8 CB, not one good combination to play in a back 4. We have 3 CM, one who is poverty, championship lvl, one who is hit and miss, and a decent one(and he is only on loan here) but not one combination that works in a midfild 3. I'm just thinking...maybe that 30 mil on Saliba could have been spent on a CM? Add 30 million to this years famous "war chest" and we get our targets. I hope it won't happen, sell Holding before you loan him out. Also if this happens, last years dealings...we end up with 102 millions spent, to get a player that we don't use and one that is second choice to 32 year old Willian...and gets to play in the cups. The guys running this club are trash.
