It’s hard.
Having watched West Ham and seen many of last season’s problems, this midfield feels like it could use Partey to help connect the back to the front.. Willian was isolated all game long even though he kept running into great spots. Having another player who can both pass through the lines and run with the ball would be helpful. To an extent, you can then cover the Aouar gap by playing either Saka or Ceballos higher up in midfield. It would be a bet that needs to pay off quickly given his age.

I don't think Willian was isolated, he had a poor game. Admittedly, there were a number of them who did.

Yeah I agree. I think a lot of players just had a bad game, which might be down to underrating West Ham or maybe it's the lack of a real preseason, who knows.

I think we felt the absence of Tierney and Maitland-Niles too. Having a completely new left flank would have been an issue even if the rest of the team had been switched on.

We aren't that good, midtable teams like WHU are going to give us a game and we need to get used to that. Fulham were just awful the week before. The fact we won is what matters, we need to pull out more wins like that because we wont play midtable teams off the pitch regularly.

I think the issue with that game was that we didn't even give ourselves a chance to impose ourselves, especially in the first half. Our moves kept breaking down due to god awful passes and touches, often under no pressure. There was one point where Willian found himself with time to run at the West Ham back line but inexplicably angled his run towards a West Ham player.

I think Partey helps us a lot more than Aouar in that sort of game. I don't mean tactically, I mean in the games where players are just doing stupid things, because he's someone who can help progress the ball up the pitch and open up spaces in a different way.

We can probably nick a few points off the teams that are better or near equal to us across the season. Liverpool, City, Chelsea, Utd, Wolves, Leicester, etc. It's the teams who get physical, psyche us out, play in a deep block and hit us on the counter that we need to find a solution for.

Basically, West Ham.

We'll lose games like this, maybe against Brighton or Sheffield again. It'll happen. We don't get to just turn up and win, and we don't have players with minds of steel. What we need to do is convert the draws. As far as I'm concerned, that is what the game against WHU was. We can't sustain with performances like that, Arteta has to get us firing against smaller teams for the most part, but whenever we have a game like this one, we need to hold fast and convert. That'll get us top four.

It'd be an amazing accomplishment if he pulled it off, so I'm not expecting it at all, but so far so good.

We haven’t been able to do this in 2 months, reckon we can achieve all the above in one week? Let’s hope so.

Like someone said, the transfer market is so fucked up. Everyone spends all summer negotiating and then 90% of the players end up moving in the final 48 hours anyway.

Was just watching the FA Cup Semi on tv the other day and he almost concede a stupid pen to Sterling. And people still thought he was decent.
