I think we need to keep the players who have a close relationship with the club and are performing at the level required.

No way should we do this. Who knows when and how Leno comes back from his injury. Much rather sell Bellerin than Martinez at this point, unless Arteta thinks that his post-Covid restart form is a flash in the pan and this is the most we will ever get for him.

Selling him would be a massive mistake. Would rather sell Leno if I had the choice. Emi is the superior keeper. He’s bigger, better at crosses, better at distributing and much more vocal. He leads the defence and inspires confidence in the back 4, and his shot-stopping is no worse than Leno’s. Plus he’s our longest serving player who’s proven his loyalty to the club which should count for something. With him in goal, we’ve brought home 2 trophies.

We absolutely can’t let someone like that go if we wanna build on our recent success.

The club will sabotage themselves massively if they sold Martinez. He is absolutely class, no doubts about it.

If we sell Emi and he contributes to a better starting 11, that’s smart.
What’s the point of a high quality asset that you get 20% utilization out of when you can sell him to someone who can get 80% utilization; and then use the funds to get yourself a great starter like Aouar.

Local paper saying Fiorentina not going for him now. As things stand, nobody is leaving 😆 . We have 34 players in the first team. Our wage bill must be the worst price/quality in England.

Hopefully that sort of stance is backed up by confidence. Torino supposedly are desperate to land him and are preparing a new bid.

You're ignoring the obvious point which is that we don't know who's the better GK. Maybe Martinez will be first choice from now on if he stays and we could sell Leno instead when we've found out for more than 20m. There's no clear answer here.

For me with Martinez, purple patch or not, he has shown he is an important part of our passing out the back game. Thay being said we seem to have improved overall as a team in this sense with the players knowing which positions to move into for the next pass etc, so the question for me is can Leno pass out the back to a similar high level? Is the team's comfort in passing out the back as a result of Emi's inclusion in the team or is Emi's distribution looking this good as a result of our improved understanding of Arteta's passing instructions by the team?

The things Emi definitely seems to have in his locker, form or not, is his height allowing him better control of his box and getting to high balls as well as his distribution both long and short. We just have to see if he's able to keep this up.

Leno is a great shot stopper as well as a quality keeper overall and has been consistent over many years. Although there are question marks over how he returns from injury as well as whether he can distribute and command high balls to a similar level as Emi, he deserves a chance at some point this season to prove whether he can fit into the way we want to play. However this can't be immediately as Emi has earned the right to be No 1 for the start of the season.

At the moment I'm leaning towards Emi because of his physical attributes as well as his ability on the ball however there isn't much in it. It'll be a tough decision to make in the end but like some of the others have said, I don't think it's something we can, or should, decide this soon.

Here's a thought, AW based his dislike of DM/defensive players as based upon how often those skills are required in a game.
If we improve the defence and midfield then the number of shots conceded should decrease, making shot stopping less important or at least less utilised than the other aspects such as communication, control of the area, catching/retaining the ball (as opposed to pushing it away, and most importantly distribution from the back.

Based upon that scenario then the balance tips even more in favor of Martinez, however that is no slight on Leno who has been magnificent behind a disjoint defence and midfield.
I'd start Martinez as #1 until proven otherwise, and keep Leno unless he wanted to leave and we got an offer we couldn't refuse.

I think one thing Martinez has in his favour is that he hasn't made any obvious errors leading to goals conceded but Leno despite all his highs does top that category unfortunately. Many high profile errors

Well put, agree with all of it. Keep both, have Leno keep Martinez on his toes. The latter has done impeccably well what's the point in having backups if they can't earn their spot via performances

Martinez definitely made some errors, he was just lucky they didn't lead to goals. Not sure we can fairly compare him to Leno on that front when he only played a quarter of a season as first choice.

It's not ignoring it at all, it's a calculated risk. You could wait a year, Martinez could lose the battle, then you have a No.2 on your hand with 1yr left on his contract next summer and struggle to get the £20m.

There's two points for me, Leno has been excellent for us over over 18 months, second only to Auba probably. So you know whatever happens he's not an issue. The other thing we know is that we could really use that £20m now, not potentially in 12 months.

If Emi is happen to stay and fight it out and we can get our business done regardless, then by all means keep him and get him to a sign a new deal. But calling it a 'massive mistake' seems like a weird conclusion to come to otherwise.

Sell Martinez. His value is high now, so it's the perfect time to sell him. We really can't afford to keep two really good GKs. Sell him and spend the money on a midfielder.

Its a bit like right back. We need to sell one, its a waste not to. I don't really care which one, they are both good enough, very little between them.

Agree it makes no sense selling Martinez for £20m and buying a replacement for £15m though.

It is odd to boast that you have 2 incredible goalies when your midfield is just Xhaka and a rented Ceballos (who costs the Emi transfer fee). Meanwhile midfielders like Milinkovic-Savic, Aouar, Partey, etc are in the wild.

Discounting his 5 errors last year leading to goals, this year Leno played 32 matches and made 2 obvious errors leading to goals. That stat discounts some errors like his weak hands in Spurs match etc.

Martinez started 23 matches for comparison. No errors leading to goals yet.

Like I said Leno is a good shot stopper but Martinez has more going for him currently. We should let them fight it out this year, and definitely not bring in a bang average keeper like Raya.

If it’s determined that there’s not much between them, sell whoever fetches the higher transfer fee and promptly reinvest received funds in midfield.
