I suspect they named him that to avoid dealing with the backlash of using any "negrito / negro" variations.
Up until recently "negro / negrito" was not an insult whatsoever. People were often referred to as "negro", "moreno", "rubio / rucio", "gringo", etc.
These days due to english-speaking media and their bizarre traumas with certain words it has become more contentious.
