Chelsea just went out this summer and signed a load of random stars for no really good reason. They had a strong core of young players doing well with the likes of Abraham, Mount,Pulisic CHO, etc but instead Abramovic wanted shiny new toys so he replaced them with hotter names.
Exactly. I think another question worth pondering is whether the new, more expensive players actually ARE better. Sure they're more hyped up, but there's very little correlation between hype and ability in many cases. There is always a risk when you sign players from a notoriously weak Bundesliga that only has one proper team. I saw Lookman tear up that league while he was on loan there. Ademola bloody Lookman. I think we've seen the same thing with many current Ligue 1 imports lately. These leagues are so far below the three big ones in terms of quality, and the gap only seems to grow bigger. They're falling behind like Eredivise.
I've never actually seen anything from Werner suggesting that he's as good as the players Chelsea themselves have produced. They're one of the best clubs in Europe when it comes to scraping up youth talent, but they don't really trust the process. To be fair to Lampard (and I don't think much of him to be honest) he probably got a bunch of players this summer who, if they aren't lesser talents, at least are less ready for top level football.
